Georgetown Defeats Long Beach State in Second Round of Rainbow Classic
12/21/2004 The Hoyas (5-3) came back from the Oral Roberts loss preventing a late surge from Long Beach State (1-7) to beat the 49ers 57-51 in the consolation round of the Rainbow Classic. Jeff Green scored the second double-double of his collegiate career, leading all players in scoring (20), rebounding (10), steals (4), and assists (3). Brandon Bowman and Ray Reed each contributed 8 points. The early start (11:00 am) affected both teams as there were a total of 19 turnovers in the first ten minutes. The Hoyas were the first to break out of the sloppy play, building a lead of 8 by intermission 28-20. For the half the Hoyas had 9 steals and had forced 15 turnovers while the 49ers had 7 steals and had forced 10. Long Beach State had 12 rebounds to GU's 8 while the Hoyas were shooting 50% from the field while holding their opponents to 41.2%. The Hoyas built on their lead in the second half, going up by as many as 13 (35-22) at the 17:09 mark, but Long Beach State fought back. Georgetown had a 10 point edge 50-40 with 2:41 remaining in the game, but the 49ers still refused to go away. After a pair of threes cut the lead to 4, Ray Reed's pair from the stripe put the edge back to six. Another 49ers trey with 11 seconds remaining put the outcome back in doubt, but a free throw by Wallace and 4 free throws by Green gave the Hoyas the win. For the game the Hoyas lost the battle of the boards 23-27, and shot 40.5% while their opponents were hitting at a 45% clip.
