Boathouse Project Update

Dear Georgetown Community:

The latest step in our long fight to build a Georgetown Boathouse is now in the hands of the National Park Service and Congress. We need your help to convince them that the vast majority of people believe the Boathouse is the right thing for the Potomac River Community. Grassroots support will be critical at this stage of the process.

On April 25, 2006, the National Park Service released its Environmental Assessment on the boathouse project. The "Preferred Alternative" proposed by the National Park Service will allow the University to proceed with a boathouse that meets the programmatic and educational needs of our intercollegiate crew program while preserving the integrity of the Potomac waterfront and the C & O Canal.

The public comment period for the Environmental Assessment extends through June 16, 2006, and there will be a public meeting for comment held in Washington, D.C. sometime in May. The National Park Service has not yet set the date and location for the meeting.

There are several ways you can help:

1. Go to our new website www.buildtheboathouse.org to get important information on Georgetown's efforts to move this project forward.

2. At the site, you will find a number of ways where you can show your support by sending comments to the National Park Service, as well as local and federal officials.

3. Attend the National Park Service public meeting to express your support for the Georgetown boathouse. We will let you know the date, time and location as soon as they are available.

4. Let your friends know how to help us and send them to our website www.buildtheboathouse.org.

Again, we are very grateful that you and others who share our commitment to making the Georgetown University boathouse a reality are willing to help. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at hoyacrew@georgetown.edu.

Thank you,

Bernard Muir
Director of Athletics
