A Peek Inside McDonough: Part One
September 30, 2005 Three themes for organizational change have emerged in McDonough over the past several months: 1) Supporting student-athletes and coaches; 2) Redefining external relations; and 3) Improving revenues and expense management. This post will look at the first of these. Support. Around Georgetown, you hear the latin phrase cura personalis a lot, but in the context of intercollegiate athletics, care for the individual means insuring that there is a proper and sufficient support structure for student-athletes and coaches. The ultimate goal is to make the student-athlete experience as good as it can be. To this end, the following objectives should help to achieve this goal: 1. Distributing sport administrator responsibilities among a greater number of senior administrators in order to provide coaches and teams the administrative attention and appropriate care needed to function at optimal levels. 2. Increasing NCAA compliance capabilities in order to protect eligibility of student-athletes and teams as well as to avoid potential adverse publicity. 3. Creating departmental focal point for coordinating personnel practices and providing liaison function with University Human Resources and University Counsel. 4. Continuing to improve access by student-athletes to the best available preventative and rehabilitative health care. 5. Adding strength and conditioning support personnel to help student-athletes avoid debilitating injuries and at the same time, improve performance. 6. Strengthening academic support for all student-athletes. 7. Working toward achieving gender equity in athletics and compliance with Title IX by adding softball to intercollegiate offerings.
