Once More, Part 4

I missed the season opening basketball game against William & Mary last Saturday. Instead, I chose to be on campus for the last game of the 2007 football season. And what an arduous year (1-9) it was for this hard-working group of young men!
None of the current footballers were on the Hilltop just four short years ago when it was our men's basketball team that was experiencing such a difficult year. Circumstances then were different for sure, but the similarity runs to the promising future of the program and the commitment of the University to strive toward excellence.

There is more. While seeking excellence in playful endeavors is but one of many elements of the University's mission, we believe, as a Catholic Jesuit school, that virtue also finds expression through service to others. And one of the ways these student-athletes provide service to others is by displaying their talents as part of something larger than themselves. During a down year like this past football season, it is immensely more challenging for a team and its members to perform day-in and day-out. But there is truth in the saying: virtue is its own reward.
And the day will come when the gridiron Hoyas will be riding high again.
