Bob Dahut was born in Brooklyn, New York and became the captain of the Brooklyn Prep football team, the fabled Jesuit Prep school which includes Joe Paterno as an alumnus. As a senior Bob was named to virtually every all-star eleven in the city and earned a four-year football scholarship to Holy Cross College.
Bob was named co-captain of the freshman football team at Holy Cross along with future Washington Redskin great Vince Promuto. Although injuries interfered with his varsity career, he did have the "pleasure" of blocking Mike Ditka when Holy Cross played Pitt.
After graduation, Bob seriously considered becoming a Jesuit but instead opted for service to country as a Marine Officer. After his military service was complete, Bob took a job with the C & P Telephone Company and became an assistant football coach at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, DC. One of his first dates with his future wife was to the St. Johns - Gonzaga Thanksgiving football game that was then played at RFK stadium. Bob eventually became CEO/President of Bell Atlantic Mobile Systems (now Verizon Wireless), before moving on to several small software companies. Upon retirement from business he returned to school and became certified as a teacher in the state of Florida. In 2004 at the age of 65 he became a reading specialist at Raines High school in Jacksonville. Until his untimely death, Bob taught reading at this urban school to ninth graders who were well below grade in their reading skills.
Bob Dahut was an athlete, a coach, a Marine, a successful businessman and an educator. He was a tremendous husband and father and a man with a deep faith and the embodiment of the Jesuit ideals of "service for others."
This award will be given annually to the player, who in the estimation of the football coaching staff, exemplifies all of the qualities that Bob possessed during off-season training and team practice. The qualities include: a strong commitment to the betterment of the team, a passion for football, a desire to improve everyday, a great work ethic, a sense of service to others, and a fanatical effort in everything they do.
This award will be presented by the head football coach at the end of the annual Blue and Gray game during spring practice. All proceeds from this endowment are to fund all aspects of the award.
