Hoya Hoop Club Open Practice
McDonough Arena, Georgetown University
The Hoya Hoop Club sponsored its annual Open Practice on Sunday, October 22 in McDonough Arena. The event started off with all of the youngsters in attendance getting autographs from the current players, and that was followed by a Q & A with Coach John Thompson III. After the Q& A, Hoop Club members enjoyed watching an hour of the team's practice, then gathered in the John Thompson lobby for dinner. Below are some excerpts from the Q & A.
On handling high expectations:
We go about our business the same way if there are no expectations than if there are high expectations. At the end of the day we've got to come in here,
lock the doors and get better.
On recruiting locally:
There's a lot of talent in the DC, Baltimore, Virginia area. There always is. I think we've been fortunate that the guys here locally think we're doing
things the right way. Hopefully, knock on wood, that will continue.
On differences in coaching styles between him and his father:
I think that's for you all to figure out. When I came back here I didn't say, "O.K., I'm going to do A, B and C like Dad did it, and I'm gonna do D, E and F
like he didn't do it." This is just who I am.
On the BIG EAST Conference:
I think the league as a whole loses a lot, but it also returns a lot. Connecticut will be young but the most talented, Villanova has the potential to be
good ... I think DePaul will be very good, Pitt has the answers, they have depth at every position, and we have the tools we just have to figure some things
out. When you start naming teams (in the BIG EAST), you name half the league.
On playing Maryland:
Why doesn't someone ask Gary Williams that question? That question always seems to end up back in this building ... As I understand it, they feel Georgetown
owes them a game. Once we go there and play, then we can start the home and home, as I understand it.
On his expectations:
To be better. I didn't put together a time table when I came here. If I had put together a five-year plan, we'd probably be ahead of that by now ...
Everyone has heard me say we want to take baby steps.
On what the fans and supporters can do to help:
Everybody has been great, the support has been great. I thank you, my guys thank you. But sooner or later we've got to address the issue of this
building.

Hoyas Unlimited Athletic Recognition Dinner
Leavey Center Ballroom, Georgetown University
A huge crowd of 325 loyal Hoyas and Hoya supporters turned out Saturday night, September 30, 2006 in the Leavey Center Ballroom on the campus of Georgetown University to celebrate the accomplishments of the current student-athletes, the hardworking core of volunteers and donors and the evening's four award winners at the 20th Annual Hoyas Unlimited Athletic Recognition Dinner.
Joe Lonardo (C'69) once again ran the show as the event's master of ceremonies, taking it upon himself to keep the evening running smoothly, only allowing the program to be interrupted by standing ovations and roars of laughter. Upon being introduced by Hoyas Unlimited President David Don (F'93, L'96), Joe invited men's swim team member Goran Bistric (B'09) to give the invocation.
After the opening remarks and recognition of the evenings special guests, each team representative came to the podium, introduced him or herself, and was given with a gift from Hoyas Unlimited. The most valuable players were also recognized and given a gift from Hoyas Unlimited, and their introductions were accompanied by a slideshow, showing each player competing in his or her respective sport.
Robert A. Duffey Scholar-Athlete Michael Ononibaku (B'06) was the first award recipient of the evening. Assistant Head Football Coach Rob Sgarlata (C'94) presented Michael with the award, telling of his leadership, effort and energy, and he said Michael is one of the few people to have ever reached his full potential on the football field. Michael was humble in his acceptance, thanking his former coaches Bob Benson, Sgarlata and Augie Maurelli, among others.
Mike Callahan (F'97), head sailing coach, was the next to receive his recognition, the Outstanding Coaching Achievement Award. Three-time national champion Andrew Campbell (F'06) presented Mike with the award, speaking about everything Mike had done for him not only as a sailor, but more importantly as a person. Mike had the energetic sailing crowd on their feet with his remarks, commending his squads for overcoming difficult obstacles to reach the pinnacle of college sailing, among them being somewhat of a mystery at times to the rest of the Georgetown campus.
Maura Devaney (N'76) was the recipient of the J. Gregory Carroll Memorial Award for Outstanding Service to Hoyas Unlimited. The surprise presenter, her husband Brian (B'76), spoke lovingly of everything she has done for Georgetown on so many levels, as well as for the kind of wife and mother she has been to their family, including each of their four children, three of whom are former or current Georgetown student-athletes. Maura admitted she figured out that Brian was the presenter just moments before it was revealed to the rest of the crowd, and was grateful for everything Georgetown has given back to her.
The evening's final recipient was Jim Higgins (B'70), who was honored with the Outstanding Contribution to Athletics Award. Director of Athletics Emeritus Frank Rienzo presented Jim with his award, keeping the audience captivated with anecdotes about Jim's generous contributions and volunteer efforts to Georgetown and Georgetown Athletics. Jim, who spends quite a bit of time on campus for various board meetings, said he gets just as excited to pull into Georgetown as he did when he was student here. He thanked his family, the other volunteers and the staff with which he has worked so closely, especially longtime friend Frank Rienzo.
Jack DeGioia then addressed the attendees, expressing his love for Georgetown Athletics and highlighting the bright future that lies ahead. He thanked all of the volunteers, student-athletes and staff for all that they do in keeping the Hoya tradition alive.
Director of Athletics Bernard Muir said a few words before inviting women's lacrosse player Maggie Koch (C'07) to give the benediction and close the evening.

One of the top defensive middies on the team, White suffered a season-ending injury late in the year but was a valuable leader on the squad.
