April 11, 2005
Washington, DC-- The Georgetown University Sailing Team competed in three regattas this past weekend. The Hoyas placed second at the MAISA Team Race Championships held at Hobart & William Smith, and placed third at the Washington College Women's Open. Results from the Maryland Spring Regatta are not yet available. For the sixth year in a row the the Georgetown University Sailing Team has qualified for the ICSA Team Race National Championship. The Hoyas travelled to Geneva, NY to compete against the top seven schools in the conference. The format for the regatta was supposed to be a double round robin amongst the seven teams followed by a single final four for a total of 48 races, but because of lack of wind, not all the races could be competed on Saturday, only sailing six races. Sunday was not much better with wind conditions and the Hoyas were forced to sail some important races in about two knots of wind. Despite the conditions the Hoyas sailed well with their only loss coming in a close light air race to host Hobart. In the end only one round robin was completed and the Hoyas ended up 2nd overall and earned a berth to the 2005 ICSA Team Race National Championship in Austin, TX.Andrew Campbell, Ed DuMoulin, Steve Streit, Dorothee Bergin, Emile Bogrand, Caroline LaMotte, Barbara Hall, Julia Graham, Chris Behm, Kyle Bergeron, JB Turney, Nick Deane all competed at this event. The Hoya Women's Team faired well at Washington College in this one day event. Both divisions have seven races each and the Hoyas finished all but one race in the top three. In B division Junior Clare Starshak skippered her first collegiate regatta and recorded a first place finish in race #6.
