Georgetown Sailing Hampered by East Coast Weather at Five Weekend Regattas

April 16, 2007

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University sailing team was divided this weekend among five regattas with its best finishes coming at the Robert P. Arrigan Memorial Regatta, which they hosted, and the North #2, hosted by Cornell University, where they placed third. The Hoyas were also fifth at the Admiral's Cup, sixth at the Dellenbaugh Women's Intersectional and tied for ninth for the Moody Trophy.

Georgetown hosted the Robert P. Arrigan Memorial Regatta this weekend and finished third of 15 schools with 53 points. Only two races in each of the two divisions were started on Sunday due to heavy rain and shifty winds, causing the final tallies to be based on eight races in each division. Navy won the regatta with 39 points, followed by St. Mary's with 49. Freshman Marco Teixidor (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/St. John's School) and sophomore Sprague Brodie (Duxbury, Mass./Milton Academy) were second in the B division with 26 points, only two points behind Navy. The pair won two races and were among the top-three in four others. In the A divisions, senior Dan Esdorn (Rye, N.Y./Rye) and freshman Caila Johnson (Newport, R.I./St. Paul's School) were third with 27 points, not finishing outside of the top-five in any start.

At the North #2 regatta, Georgetown was third of 17 schools with 112 points over the 24 total races in the two divisions. Kings Point took the title with 54 points, followed by Cornell with 91. Senior Jessica Stewart (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) and freshman Alexandra Taylor (Hobe Sound, Fla./The Benjamin School) were third in the B division with 48 points, placing among the top-three in half of the 12 races, including winning the second start of the weekend. In the A division, freshman Hugh McBride (Darien, Conn./Green Farms Academy) and sophomore Madeleine Maguire (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) were fourth with 64 points, including nine finishes in the top-six.

In the race for the Admiral's Cup, hosted by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy-Kings Point, the Hoyas were fifth of 20 schools with 325 points. Yale won the Cup with 246 points, barely beating out St. Mary's (262) and Hobart/William Smith (269). The event was shortened due to inclement weather, allowing for only 13 races in each of the three divisions. In the A division, junior Chris Behm (Hampton, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) and sophomore Carly Chamberlain (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) were fifth in the field with 88 points. After troubles with the first couple races, the pair responded by finishing in the top-three in six starts, including winning the weekend's seventh race. Seniors J.B. Turney (Winnetka, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) and Caroline LaMotte (Oxford, Md./The Hotchkiss School) placed sixth in the B division with 112 points, winning the first and 12th races. In the C division, senior Langdon Mitchell (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) tied for ninth with 125 points.

The women's squad battled rain and cold temperatures at the Dellenbaugh Women's Regatta, hosted by Brown University to place sixth of 15 schools. The Hoyas totaled 184 points over the two division's 28 races. St. Mary's won the Dellenbaugh Trophy with 94 points. Junior Blaire Herron (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) and senior Emily Siguler (Conway, Mass./The Hotchkiss School) were fourth in the A division with 83 points, including seven top-five finishes and two victories. Sophomore Emily Babbitt (Dartmouth, Mass./Bishop Stang) and junior Jamie Loeks (Rye, N.Y./Rye) were seventh with 101 points and were in the top-half of the field in seven of the 14 races.

At the final regatta, Georgetown was tied for ninth of 15 schools for the Moody Trophy at the University of Rhode Island. Sunday competition was cancelled due to weather issues, leaving the regatta shortened to seven races in each of the two divisions. Host URI won the trophy with 70 points. Sophomores Nik Holtan (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) and Andi Bailey (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Island/Antilles School) were fifth in the B division with 48 points. The pair was among the top-half of the field in five of the seven races. Meanwhile, in the A division, junior Zack Kavanaugh (Dartmouth, Mass./Darthmouth) and senior Emilie Bogrand (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Taft) was 13th with 69 points.

The Hoyas are scheduled for three regattas next weekend, including the MAISA Women's and Open Championships and the Thompson Trophy.
