Georgetown Wins First-Ever America Trophy; Qualifies for ICSA Coed National Championship

April 30, 2007

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University sailing team won the America Trophy for the first time in its distinguished history. With the win, the Hoyas qualify for the upcoming ICSA Coed Fleet Racing National Championship, which will be hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy from May 30 - June 1.

Georgetown, ranked No. 8 in the latest SailingWorld college rankings, took the top-spot with 155 points, topping No. 2-ranked St. Mary's (171 points), Navy (192) and No. 3-ranked Hobart/William Smith (196).

Seniors J.B. Turney (Winnetka, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) and Caroline LaMotte (Oxford, Md./The Hotchkiss School) placed first in the B division with 70 points over 18 races. St. Mary's was second with 85, followed closely by Navy with 87. Turney and LaMotte posted five first-place finishes and placed in the top-five in all but three races.

In the A division, the Georgetown duo of junior Chris Behm (Hampton, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) and sophomore Carly Chamberlain (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) was second with 85 points, trailing only Hobart/William Smith, who had 68 points over the 18 division races. The Hoya pair won four starts on the weekend and were among the top-five on 13 occasions.

The Hoyas are off from competition for a couple weeks until the national championships begin on May 23 with the ICSA Women's Championship, hosted by Old Dominion University.
