Hoyas Win John T. Jackson Memorial Regatta, Continue to Climb in National Polls

3/22/2004

John Jackson Memorial Team Race @ Georgetown - 9 Teams (March 6-7)
Georgetown Sailors: Andrew Campbell, Bill Jorch, Tyler Haskell, Thatcher Spring, Derek Webster, Steve Streit, Barabara Hall, Emilie Lincoln, Emilie Bogrand, Chris Harvey, Colleen Hehir

The First Annual John Jackson Memorial Team Race regatta was a big success both on and off the water. The regatta is named in honor of John T. Jackson '03, a member of the sailing team and recent Georgetown grad who died this past summer in a tragic deck collapse accident in Chicago.  John's parents and sisters were on hand all weekend to watch the races.  Saturday night the Spinnaker Set hosted a party at FScotts and it was a huge success, raising over $2,000 for the John T. Jackson Memorial Fund.  On the water the Hoyas controlled the regatta from start to finish.  The real excitment came when a squall rolled through the race course bringing 55mph winds and flipping over every team except the Hoyas.

C div.  1st w/ 22 points  Andrew Campbell
D div.  7th w/ 65 points  Bill Jorch, Derek Webster

This was a great regatta for the Hoyas who actually would have won had there been any racing on Sunday.  Extreme winds created possible unsafe and equipment-damaging conditions. With a forecast for sustained winds throughout the day, the race committee decided to abandon racing for Sunday and conclude the regatta at 1030. Since C and D division only completed 10 races in the regatta, A and B races 11 and 12 did not count in the final result.   In those races the Hoyas finished 1,4 in A and 1,1 in B. Not counting those races took Georgetown out of the lead and put the Hoyas into second overall.  Had those races counted GU would have finished 3rd in A and 3rd in B and would have won  A and B combined.

Regardless of what races counted it was a great regatta for the Hoyas.  Andrew Campbell dominated his div once again.  In A div Tyler and crews had a string of 8 races in the top 5.  In B Thatcher Spring and Chris Harvey won six of the last nine races after a slow start.  The regatta was filmed by College Sports Television and will be shown at some point in the near future.
