Georgetown's coed sailing team lived up to their #1 national ranking this weekend, March 31-April 1, by winning two regattas and placing second in another. The Hoyas notched a first place finish in the Arrigan Memorial Regatta and the KP Dinghy Open while also finishing second in the Stevens Match Race.
At the Arrigan Memorial Regatta, hosted by Georgetown University, the Hoyas placed first overall by virtue of their 40 points. In the A Division, the team of senior Ryan Costello (Fairhaven, Mass./Tabor Academy), senior John Camera (Duxbury, Mass./Milton Academy), senior Dana Scalere (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial), and senior Baye Emery (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) finished with 18 points to win first place. In the B Division, the Georgetown crew of senior Raoul Mangana (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Loyola), senior Peter King (Laurinburg, N.C./The Hotchkiss School), senior Alec Barker (Wyncote, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep), senior Gavin Weiss (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich Academy), and senior Paige Black (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) took third place with 18 points. This weekend's regatta also played host to the sailing team's 1st Annual Parents Weekend. The Hoyas' second win came at the KP Dinghy Open at King's Point. In the A Division, the duo of junior Brain Bissell (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) and sophomore Erin Gabrielson (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) took fourth place with 40 points. Meanwhile, in B Division racing, junior Ken Ward (Tampa, Fla./The Hotchkiss School) and sophomore Emma Trentman (St. Leonard, Md./The Calverton School) placed first with 21 points. The Hoyas finished with a combined 61 points, narrowly edging Hobart/William Smith's 62 points for first place. The Hoyas' final race of the weekend was the Stevens Match Race, held at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J. In light winds, junior Pat Donegan (Yarmouth Port, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth Regional), junior Jeff Chang (Md./Naval Academy), and senior Bonnie Retus (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown) sailed their way to a second place finish behind King's Point. This weekend, April 7-8, the Hoyas will compete in two races, the MAISA Team Race at Old Dominion and the Washington College Women's Open.
