GUST Qualifies for ICSA Team Race National Championships

4/13/2004

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Georgetown sailing team won the MAISA Team Race Championship last weekend for the third time in the last four years to qualify for the ICSA Team Race National Championships, held this year in Cascade Locks, Oregon. This marks the fifth consecutive year that Georgetown has qualified for the ICSA National Championships.

With conditions ranging from very little wind to a nice sea breeze of 10-12mph, Georgetown sailed against the top six teams from MAISA in a triple round-robin at the MAISA Team Race Championship. The regatta also featured the top three ranked teams in the nation: No. 1 St. Mary’s, No. 2 Georgetown and No. 3 Hobart.  The races were all close but the Hoyas sailed well and, despite losing some close races to St. Mary’s, Georgetown was able to handle the rest of the teams. The top three teams from the regatta qualified for nationals.

Elsewhere last weekend, the Hoyas dominated the Maryland Spring Invite from start to finish, tallying 68 points to win the event.  Both divisions sailed well and the team of Chris Gosselin and Chris King was especially strong, winning races by great distances.

This weekend the Hoyas will be competing in three events: the Robert P. Arrigan Memorial Regatta at Georgetown, the Admirals Cup at Kings Point and the Moody Trophy at the University of Rhode Island.
