CASCADE LOCKS, Ore. – The Georgetown University Sailing Team finished off a strong 2003-04 season by finishing second at the 2004 ICSA Fleet Racing National Championships. The Hoyas qualified for all three ICSA Spring Championships for only the second time in team history.  The women's team finished eighth overall and team racing finished sixth overall.

In addition to their best-ever finish at Fleet Race Nationals, the Hoyas had four sailors named All-Americans. Sophomore Andrew Campbell (San Diego, Calif./ The Bishops School) and senior Tyler Haskell (Newport Beach, Calif./ Newport Harbor) were named All-American Skippers, junior Barbara Hall (Marion, Mass./ Tabor Academy) was named All-American Crew and sophomore Derby Anderson (Annapolis, Md./ The Key School) was named Honorable Mention All-American Women's Skipper.

The second place finish is the best ever for the Hoyas. The previous best was fifth place in 2001.  The Hoyas sailed well throughout the entire event but the Hawaii team was just a bit better.  The last two days of racing were very close but Hawaii never made any big mistakes and were able to stay in the lead.  In A division, sophomore Andrew Campbell sailed a fantastic regatta and finished only four points out of first.  In B division, skippers Tyler Haskell and Thatcher Spring combined for an excellent regatta.  Tyler sailed the last two days and had only one race out of the top 10.  The sailing conditions for the regatta were great but also very challenging - the wind ranged from 8-22mph and there was a strong current that kept the fleet bunched up going downwind.  When the wind was its highest, Andrew Campbell and crew Nick Deane would win races by over a minute - a feat almost unheard of at a National Championship.

The women's team finished the year with a very strong performance at Nationals.  The regatta was close throughout, and the Hoyas beat a number of great teams.  In A division, sophomore Derby Anderson and crew Barbara Hall sailed quite well, finishing ahead of a number of great women's sailors.  In the last race of the regatta, seniors Eliza Ryan and Emilie Lincoln finished second overall to help the Hoyas jump from 11th to eighth overall.

This was a disappointing finish for the Hoyas, who had every reason to believe they could win the regatta.  The results don't reflect how close the racing was amongst the top eight teams.  The Hoyas had moments of domination that were coupled with some tremendous bad luck and mistakes.  The Hoyas started out the first round by going 5-1 and headed to the finals only one race out of first.  In the final round the Hoyas sailed a double round robin against the top teams and were winning every race until the last mark, before suffering a turn for the worse. The bright spots included races against St. Mary's, where the Hoyas dominated them, with their last race against them a blowout 1,2, victory.  The disappointment from this regatta certainly played into giving an outstanding effort at the Fleet Racing Nationals.
