March 28, 2001 Georgetown University's Sailing Team competed in six races over the weekend of March 24-25, winning both the Southern New England Team Race at Harvard and MAISA/SAISA Intersectional at Hampton University. The Hoyas also placed second in the Old Dominion Team Race at Old Dominion and third at the Maryland Spring Invite at the University of Maryland. The Hoyas, whose coed team is ranked 3rd nationally, raced to 21 wins and four losses en route to an overall victory at the Southern New England Team Race at Harvard. The race, a previow of the Team Racing Nationals which will be sailed on the Charles June 3-5, featured the best schools from New England and the Pacific Coast. Inexperience in Larks cost the Hoyas two races on Saturday. After flipping over at the gybe against both the Univeristy of Vermont and Dartmouth the Hoyas were able to bounce back from the losses and finish 10-3 on Saturday, good for a second-place. Sunday began with the top seven schools competing in a single round robin in FJ's. GU went 6-0 winning each race easily. The top seven schools met again in Larks for a single round robin in the afternoon. The Hoyas finished 5-1 which proved to be just enough as they took first place, one win ahead of 20-5 Dartmouth. Harvard (16-8), Connecticut College (13-12), and Tufts (13-12) rounded out the top five. Georgetown's boats were skippered by junior's Brian Bissell (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor), Ken Ward (Tampa, Fla./The Hotchkiss School), Curtis Flood (Richmond, Ky./St. George's School), and senior Gavin Weiss (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich Academy). The team's crew was made up of freshman Elizabeth Ryan (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead), junior Leah Williams (South Dartmouth, Mass./Tabor Academy), and sophomore Shelly Wentworth (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable). Georgetown provided another strong showing at the MAISA/SAISA Intersectional at Hampton University claiming second place. Peter King (Sr., Laurinburg, N.C./The Hotchkiss School) and Emilie Lincoln (Fr., New York, N.Y./The Hewitt School) sailed the "A" division taking third place. Sophomores Byron LaMotte (Oxford, Md./The Hotchkiss School) and Emma Trentman (St. Leonard,Md./The Calverton School) dominated the "B" division winning by more than 20 poionts. In the Old Dominiun Team Race at Old Dominion, the Hoyas were edged by St. Mary's in a sail-off for first-place. GU, the only team without Heavy air crews, finished the first round robin on Saturday in first place. On Sunday the winds were lighter and the Hoyas sailed well defeating #1 Charleston and #4 ODU. However, the Hoyas lost a close race to Hobart and ended up in a tie at 10-3 with St. Mary's for the combined round robin score after both days. Georgetown lost the decisive sail-off falling into second place. GU's boats consisted of skippers Ryan Costello (Sr., Fairhaven, Mass./Tabor Academy), John Camera (Sr., Duxbury, Mass./Milton Academy), and Tyler Haskell (Fr., Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor). The team's crews were made up of Dana Scalere (Sr., Rockville Centre, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial), Baye Emery (Sr., Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich), and Mimi Elliot (So., Coeur d'Alene, Idaho/The Hotchkiss School). The Hoyas also posted a strong finish at the Owen Trophy, hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. In the "B" Division, freshman Thatcher Spring (Belmont, Mass./Belmont Spring) and freshman Chris Harvey (Rilton, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) tallied 109 points to finish in sixth place. Senior Raoul Magana (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Loyola) and sophomore Baye Uysaler (Istanbul, Turkey/Robert College) scored 111 points to finish seventh in the "A" Division. The two teams' combined score of 220 earned the Hoyas a sixth place overall finish. GU produced another strong performance in the Atlantic Coast Singlehanded Champs at Navy. Freshmen Bill Jorch (Northport, N.Y./Northport) and Derek Webster (Irvine, Calif./University High School) tallied 141 and 175 points respectively good for eight and ninth place finishes. Jorch claimed three top five finishes while Webster had four, including a first place finish in the opening race. Senior Alec Barker (Wyncote, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep), competing in just his second laser regatta sailing, finished 18th out of 31 with 249 points while posting two top 10 finishes. Georgetown ended up third in a fleet of 10 teams in the Maryland Spring Invite at the University of Maryland. The results of this regatta have not been officially released. Next weekend the Hoyas have three regattas: the Arrigan Memorial Regatta at Georgetown, the King's Poiont Spring Open at U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, and the Match Race Open at Stevens.
