Bethany Bower enters her 11th season as the head coach of Georgetown's men's and women's swimming team, and her 18th year overall of collegiate coaching. Under her leadership each team has achieved Academic All-America status each semester since her start in 1994. In addition, almost ever school record has been broken during her tenure at Georgetown. Last season, both the men's and women's squads finished in the top two in the NOrtheast Conference Championships, placing first and second respectively. The team also did well at the ECAC Championships, with the men finishing 21st and the women 10th.
Prior to her arrival at Georgetown, Bower served as the assistant women's swimming coach at the U.S. Naval Academy from 1989-93. While coaching, she served as a physical education instructor, as well as achieving the rank of lieutenant, and was awarded the Nave Achievement Medal for Excellence. Bower started her coaching career at Colgate University where she was the assistan men's and women's swimming coach from 1985-87. She landed her first head coaching job in 1988 with Central Connecticut State and stayed for one season before moving on to the U.S. Naval Academy.
Bower attended Eisenhower College from 1980-82 and recieved her B.A. in political science after graduating from Hartwick College in 1984. In 1989 she obtained her Master in Education degree with a concentration in physical education/sports management from Springfield College. In Bower's junior and senior years at Hartwick, she finished with NCAA All-America honors in the 50- and 100-freestyle. As a freshman at Eisenhower, Bower was the NAIA national champion in the 50- and 100-freestyle and as a sophomore she was an NCAA All-American in the same events. Currently she holds the 50-, 100-, and 200-freestyle records at both Hartwick College and Eisenhower College. In 2002, Bower was inducted into the Hartwick College Hall of Fame.
Bower is a member of the American Swim Coaches and College Swim Coaches Assosciation. In addition, she is the president of the ECAC Championship Meet Committee.
