Steven Cartwright was named Head Coach of the Georgetown University swimming and diving program in April 2007. He had previously served as the Interim Head Coach since December 2006 and before that had been an assistant coach for the previous two-plus seasons.

During his tenure at Georgetown, the Hoyas have experienced tremendous success both in the pool and in the classroom. Since his arrival on the Hilltop, 22 school records have been broken and over 50 percent of the times listed in the All-Time Top-10 List were recorded. The CSCAA (Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America) recognized the program as two of the top All-Academic Teams in the nation for the spring semester of 2006. For the spring semester of 2007, the men's team had the highest GPA of all Division I swimming and diving programs in the country.

During the summer of 2007, he was a member of the staff at the 30th Annual Longhorns Swimming Camp at the University of Texas at Austin. The camp trains roughly 1,000 swimmers over a six-week period and is considered by many to be one of the best swim camps in the world. Cartwright worked closely with the eight-time NCAA Coach of the Year and 2008 Head Men's Olympic Coach Eddie Reese. He also worked with three-time NCAA team champion coach Kim Brackin and Jim Henry and Kris Kubik, who serve as Longhorn assistant coaches.

In addition to the top-level coaches he worked with, Cartwright was side-by-side with Olympic gold medalists and current world record holders Neil Walker, Brendan Hansen, Aaron Peirsol and Ian Crocker as well gold medalists Josh Davis and Kirsty Coventry.

Prior to Cartwright's arrival in 2004, he served with some of the largest and most successful swim teams in the United States, including the Rockville-Montgomery Swim Club in North Bethesda, Md. where he trained and developed sectional-level qualifiers. At Seacoast Swimming Association in Dover, N.H., Cartwright trained and developed national qualifiers and coached under the renowned Mike Parratto (1991 Olympic Festival Head Coach, 1991 International Distance Camp Assistant Coach, 1993 U.S. National Junior Team, 1994 National Team Distance Camp), helping the club to once again be named one of USA Swimming's Silver Medal teams. Cartwright has also coached teams with the Montgomery County Swimming League, including the Fallsmead Sharks and the Water's Landing Thunder, where his team was the 2005 Division H runner-up.

Cartwright was a US Open qualifier in the 1000 and 1650 yard freestyle, a junior national qualifier in the 200 breaststroke and an NCAA provisional qualifier in the 200 butterfly. His collegiate swimming experience includes notable accomplishments such as the Catholic University of America team record holder in the 200 butterfly and the 2000 Eastern College Athletic Association (ECAC) Conference champion in the same event. He was named the 2000 and 2001 MVP at Catholic and the 2000 Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Swimmer of the Year, the same year his squad won the CAC Men's Team Championship. While swimming at St. Bonaventure, his team won the 1999 Atlantic-10 Conference title. Cartwright was awarded a full athletic scholarship and signed a National Letter of Intent to St. John's University in Jamaica, N.Y.; however, the institution no longer has a swimming and diving program.

He still holds Maine Swimming records in the 17-18 500 freestyle (4:42.67), 1000 freestyle (9:35.75) and 1650 freestyle (16:05.98).

Cartwright earned a bachelor of arts in philosophy from the Catholic University of America.

He is a Level 4 certified coach with the American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA), is a member of College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) and the World Swimming Coaches Association (WSCA). He resides in Washington, D.C.
