Swimming and Diving Adds Four BIG EAST Qualifiers in Last Meet of the Regular Season

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown swimming and diving program qualified four more student-athletes for the BIG EAST Conference Championship in its last meet of the season, when they swam against George Mason on Friday night at the Aquatic and Fitness Center in Fairfax, Va. The men lost a 139.5-95.5 decision for an overall 0-10 record on the season while the women lost, 112-95.5, for a 2-9 overall record.

On the men's side, two more student-athletes qualified for the BIG EAST Championship. Sophomore diver Michael McWilliams (Potomac, Md./Gonzaga High) qualified in the one-meter diving event with a score of 245.62. Freshman John Deppe (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) qualified in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 53.47 and the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:56.92; he was the top-finisher in both events. Freshman Brian Koh (Rowland Heights, Calif./Damien) qualified in two additional events as he swam the 200 breaststroke in 2:14.84 and the 400 individual medley in 4:13.19, enough for a first-place finishes in both events. Freshman Eric Mooney (Absecon, N.J./Holy Spirit) took first place for the Hoyas in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.40. Rounding out the top performances was the 200 freestyle relay quartet of Deppe, Mooney, freshman Wes Going (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University High) and sophomore Goran Bistric (Saugus, Calif./William S. Hart), the squad took first place with a time of 1:30.79.

The women added two more BIG EAST qualifiers as freshman Suzanne Waller (Darien, Conn./Darien) took first in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:45.36 and second in the 200 backstroke. Also qualifying for the conference championship was junior Megan Maragakes (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) in the 100 freestyle with a time of 55.33. Freshman Laura Stark (Martinsville, N.J./Mount St. Mary Academy) took first in the 500 freestyle while fellow-freshman Laura Alito (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) took first in the 100 butterfly. Also taking home first-place finishes for the Blue and Gray were junior Caitlin Colling (Monson, Mass./Monson) in the 200 freestyle; sophomore Christina DiNapoli (Saddle River, N.J./Immaculate Heart) in the 100 breaststroke; and freshman Tara Powers (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) in the 1650 freestyle. The Hoyas took top crown in the final event of the meet as Colling, Alito, and freshmen Lindsay Vickroy (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) and Emma Porteus (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable) swam the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:40.89.

 

 

The Hoyas qualified 24 student-athletes for the BIG EAST Conference Championship, held in East Meadow, N.Y. This is the largest group the Hoyas have ever sent to the postseason. The championship will start on Wednesday, February 14 and extend through Saturday, February 17.
