Storrs, N.Y. - The Georgetown swimming and diving team concluded its 2008 dual meet schedule on Saturday, as freshman Keenan Timko (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) posted two BIG EAST Championship qualifying times in the 100 yard backstroke and the 100 yard butterfly and sophomore Wes Going posted a qualifying time in the 100 yard butterfly, despite the Georgetown men's 177-108 loss to Connecticut and a 154.50-138.50 loss to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. The women's team dropped its dual meet with Connecticut 194-97. Sophomore Brian Koh (Rowland Heights, Calif./Damien) picked up the Hoyas' first win in the fourth event of the afternoon, defeating the rest of the field by six-seconds to take the 1000 yard freestyle in 10:14.87. In the 100 breaststroke freshmen Thomas Graham and Timko finished third and fourth, though Timko posted a time of 1:01.77 to make the BIG EAST qualifying cut for the event. Graham had previously made his cut in the 100 breaststroke. Freshman Mallory Kiplinger (Darien, Conn./Darien) picked up the Hoya women's first win of the afternoon, taking first place in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:13.77. Senior Claire Nugent (Westport, Conn./Hopkins School) and sophomore Fran Pirog (New York, N.Y./The Brearley School) finished second and third respectively to complete the Hoyas' sweep. Again, the women were able to take the top three spots, this time in the 100 butterfly, as freshman Ali Christie (Edison, N.J./Mount St. Mary) led the way, finishing in 1:02.30. Junior Katelyn O'Connor (New Rochelle, N.Y./The Ursuline School) and sophomore Mary McGuire (Port Chester, N.Y./Sacred Heart) rounded out the top three.
Timko posted his second qualifying time of the day, finishing the 100 butterfly in 53.41, while Going finished just behind in 53.80. Both have recorded qualifying times in three events. GU concluded the day, as the women took the top three places in the 200 freestyle relay. Senior Caitlin Colling (Monson, Mass./Monson), sophomore Laura Alito (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell), sophomore Lindsay Vickroy (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) and Kiplinger won the event in 1:43.11. Georgetown will now rest in preparation for the BIG EAST Championships beginning on February 20. The Hoyas have qualified 32 student-athletes, up from 24 a year ago. |
