Georgetown Swimming and Diving Completes First Day at BIG EAST Championships

Washington, D.C. - After the first day of competition at the BIG EAST Championships at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow, N.Y., the Georgetown women's swimming and diving team is tied for 10th and the men's team is in 11th place. On Wednesday, Feb. 15, the women completed the one meter diving event, 800 yard freestyle relay and the 200 freestyle relay while the men completed the 800 freestyle relay and the 200 freestyle relay.

On the women's side, senior tri-captain Katie Amaro (Shreveport, La./Loyola Prep) teamed up with fellow senior Julie Dougherty (East Haven, Conn./East Haven) and sophomores Tori Maffey (Mountainside, N.J./Mount St. Mary) and Caitlin Colling (Monson, Mass./Monson) to take 10th place in the 800 freestyle relay with a time of 7:48.50, earning 12 points for the team. Also finishing in 10th place was the quartet of junior Liz Nugent (Westport, Conn./The Hopkins School), senior tri-captain Corinne Rhodes (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) and sophomores Claire Nugent (Westport, Conn./The Hopkins School) and Colling with a time of 1:50.28 in the 200 medley relay, earning 14 points for the squad. The quartet also broke the school record of 1:50.86, set by the same squad in 2005.

For the men, sophomore Chris Ball (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham), freshman Daniel Robinson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) and senior tri-captains Heath Walden (Scituate, Mass./Boston College High) and Jon Hayden (Woodbridge, Va./Osbourn Park) recorded a 10th place finish in the 800 medley relay, earning 14 points for the Hoyas. Finishing in 11th place in the 200 medley relay was the squad consisting of Walden, Robinson and freshmen David Ballinger (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) and Goran Bistric (Saugus, Calif./William S. Hart) with a time of 1:38.48.

 

 

The Hoyas continue competition tomorrow at the Nassau County Aquatic Center with the men's and women's 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley and the 50 freestyle. The BIG EAST Championships continue through Saturday.
