Feb. 15, 2007 Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown swimming and diving program broke three school records on the second day of competition at the BIG EAST Championship held at the Nassau Aquatic Center in East Meadow, N.Y. Following the day's competition, the women's team is currently 10th of 12 teams while the men are 11th of 12. Notre Dame leads the women for the second-straight day while West Virginia's men slipped past Notre Dame, the leaders heading into today's competition, to take first place.
Freshman Laura Stark (Martinsville, N.J./Mount St. Mary) twice re-set the school record in the 200 yard individual medley. Stark broke the record earlier this season, only to re-set her own record during the morning preliminary session with a time of 2:06.28, the previous record was 2:07.87. The time earned her a 15th seed for the final round and was the first scoring individual time for the Georgetown swimming and diving program since 2002. Stark then set the record again with a time of 2:05.85 in the final heat of the event, placing 15th.
Freshman Laura Alito (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) set the school record in the 50 freestyle during the morning preliminary round. She swam the event with a time of 24.50, the previous record was 24.62 and set in 1998.
In the evening session, the ninth-place quartet of freshmen Lindsay Vickroy (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga), Emma Porteus (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable), Alito and junior Caitlin Colling (Monson, Mass./Monson) set a new school record in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:37.80. The previous record (1:38.50) was set in 2000.
On the men's side, the foursome of freshmen Eric Mooney (Absecon, N.J./The Holy Spirit) and Wes Going (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University High) and sophomores Goran Bistric (Saugus, Calif./William S. Hart) and Daniel Robinson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) placed 10th in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:26.66.
The four-day championship continues tomorrow with the morning session beginning at 10 a.m. and the evening session commencing at 6 p.m.
