Feb. 16, 2006 Washington, D.C. - Upon completion of the second day of events, the Georgetown men's swimming and diving team is in 11th place at the BIG EAST Championships, held at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow, N.Y.; the men competed in the one meter diving event, 500 yard freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle and the 200 freestyle relay today. The women are also in eleventh place after the second day; the women completed the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle and 200 freestyle relay.
On the men's side, senior tri-captain Don Ball (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) teamed up with brother sophomore Chris Ball (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and freshmen David Ballinger (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) and Goran Bistric (Saugus, Calif./William S. Hart) in the 200 freestyle relay for an 11th place finish with a time of 1:27.73. Chris Ball also turned in a 35th place finish in the 500 freestyle, with senior tri-captain Jon Hayden (Woodbridge, Va./Osbourn Park) finishing two spots behind him in 37th place. Freshman Daniel Robinson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) swam the 200 individual medley in 1:58.94, just over a second short of the school record. Senior diver Doug Curran (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) finished in 17th place in the one meter diving with 182.50 points. Fellow senior diver Santini Reali (Sarasota, Fla./Pine View) was just behind him in 19th place.
For the women, the quartet of sophomores Caitlin Colling (Monson, Mass./Monson) and Tori Maffey (Mountainside, N.J./Mount St. Mary) and senior tri-captains Corinne Rhodes (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) and Katie Amaro (Shreveport, La./Loyola Prep) placed 11th in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:40.02. Colling went on to place 29th in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:10.70. Amaro finished in 36th place in the 500 freestyle event.
The BIG EAST Championships continue tomorrow at the Nassau County Aquatic Center with the men's and women's 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke and the 400 medley relay. The competition will continue through Saturday evening. |
