Feb. 16, 2007 Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown swimming and diving program broke five school records on the third day of competition at the BIG EAST Championship held at the Nassau Aquatic Center in East Meadow, N.Y. Following the day's competition, the women's team is currently 10th of 12 teams while the men are 11th of 12. Notre Dame is currently in first place on both the men's and women's side.
On the women's side, freshman Laura Alito (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) broke the school record in the 100 yard butterfly in the morning preliminary session with a time of 57.00, enough for a 15th seed going into the final round. Alito then swam the event in 56.38 to take 10th place overall in the event and breaking the record she set in the morning.
Alito then teamed up with fellow freshmen Laura Stark (Martinsville, N.J./Mount St. Mary) and Emma Porteus (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable) and junior Tori Maffey (Mountainside, N.J./Mount St. Mary) to break the school record in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:57.84. Bistric previously set the record earlier this season. The time was enough to qualify Bistric for the final round in the evening session, where he took 16th place overall. Bistric also set a school record during the preliminary round of the 100 butterfly. He swam the event in 51.30, just one-one hundreth of a second faster than the previous record of 51.31 set in 2003.
