Colling Sets Women's School Record in 100 Freestyle en Route to a Fourth-Place Finish at the 2007 Patriot Invitational

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown women's swimming and diving program finished fourth of eight teams during the three-day Patriot Invitational held on the campus of George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. Senior Caitlin Colling (Monson, Mass./Monson) broke the women's school record in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.78 for a seventh overall finish. The men placed sixth of eight teams in the invitational.

Throughout the event, the Hoyas posted 79 BIG EAST qualifying times - 46 in new events. The swimming and diving program added 13 new qualifiers for a total of 28, four more than the Hoyas took to the BIG EAST Conference Championship during the 2006-07 campaign. They recorded 138 season-best times and set four freshman records.

The George Mason women won the three-day event picking up 815 points followed by UMBC (804.5), UNC Wilmington (804.5), Georgetown (453), Seton Hall (416), George Washington (273), Shippensburg (271) and American (226). The fourth-place finish was the highest in the history of the Georgetown program.

Freshman Mallory Kiplinger (Darien, Conn./Darien)set two freshman records in the 100 and 200 freestyle with times of 53.52 and 1:54.47, respectively. She took home sixth-place honors in the 200 freestyle and an 11th-place finish in the 100 freestyle. Kiplinger also finished 13th in the 500 freestyle and 11th in the 200 individual medley. Fellow freshman Alison Christie (Edison, N.J./Mount St. Mary) set a new freshman record in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:10.34, good enough for seventh place while she added a sixth-place finish in the 400 individual medley and a 13th-place performance in the 1650 freestyle. Freshman Megan Harvey (Norristown, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame de Namur) finished 16th in the 500 freestyle and turned in an eighth-place performance in the 200 butterfly.

 

 

In addition to her record-breaking performance in the 100 freestyle, Colling added seventh and ninth-place finishes in the 200 individual medley and the 50 freestyle, respectively. Fellow senior Tori Maffey (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) placed 11th in the 100 backstroke.

Sophomore Laura Alito (West Caldwell, N.J./James A. Caldwell) took home two fourth-place finishes in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke along with a 14th-place performance in the 200 butterfly. Classmate Laura Stark (Martinsville, N.J./Mount St. Mary) finished fourth in the 200 individual medley and ninth in the 100 butterfly. Junior Katelyn O'Connor (New Rochelle, N.Y./The Ursuline School) rounded out the top performers in the 200 butterfly as she finished 15th and also added an 11th-place performance in the 200 backstroke with sophomore Margaret Kimball (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) following close behind in 16th. The final sophomore to land a top-16 score was Emma Denvir (Bethesda, Md./Stone Ridge) who finished 13th in the 100 breaststroke and 13th in the 200 breaststroke.

The men's competition was led by UMBC with 1305 points followed by George Mason (597), Seton Hall (558.5), Shippensburg (440), UNC Wilmington (318.5), Georgetown (311), American (225) and George Washington (83).

On the men's side, Thomas Graham (Washington, D.C./St. Albans) finished seventh in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:00.72, enough for a freshman record. He then added a 14th-place showing in the 200 breaststroke. Classmate Kevin Taylor (Malverne, N.Y./Chaminade) followed up in 12th place in the same event. Junior captain Daniel Robinson (Pitttsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) took home three top-16 performances when he finished 13th, 15th and 16th in the 400 individual medley, 200 individual medley and 200 backstroke, respectively. Classmate Goran Bistric (Saugus, Calif./William S. Hart) was the top Blue and Gray finisher in the 200 backstroke as he finished fourth with sophomore James LiVolsi (Scotch Plains, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) placing 11th and sophomore Wes Going (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University High) right behind him in 12th place. LiVolsi also finished 16th in the 500 freestyle.

Bistric took home top Hoya honors in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke - he finished in fourth place overall in both events. Going was the only other Hoya to place in the 100 backstroke with a 15th-place performance. Junior David Ballinger (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) took 12th and 15th place in the 200 and 100 butterfly, respectively. Also placing in the 200 butterfly was freshman Hamilton Jordan (Frisco, Texas/Jesuit College Prep) who finished seventh and sophomore John Deppe (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) who finished 10th. Sophomore Brian Koh (Rowland Heights, Calif./Damien) placed 13th in the 200 breaststroke while freshman Tom Crecelius (West Lafayette, Ind./West Lafayette) finished the 1650 freestyle in 11th place, the only Hoya to finish in the top 16. Fellow freshman Ray Zomerfeld (Coral Gables, Fla./Belin Jesuit Prep) finished the 400 IM with a 16th-place performance.

In the diving events, freshman Caitlin Karniski (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) finished fifth and sixth in the one and three meter diving events, respectively. Freshman Rebecca Jenkinson (Concord, Mass./Concord Carlisle) finished seventh in the three meter and eighth in the one meter while sophomore Maija Paegle (Arlington, Va./Bishop O'Connell) finished ninth in the one meter. Junior Michael McWilliams finsihed third in the one meter and turned in a seventh-place performance in the three meter for the men.

The Hoyas return to the water on Saturday, December 1 when they host Villanova in a BIG EAST Conference meet at McCarthy Pool. The meet is slated for 1 p.m.
