Jan. 19, 2007 Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown swimming and diving program celebrates Senior Day on Saturday, January 20 when they host crosstown foe American University for the final home meet at McCarthy Pool. The meet is slated for 1 p.m.
The Blue and Gray have qualified 18 student-athletes for the BIG EAST Conference Championship to be held in East Meadow, N.Y. from February 14-17. The men stand at 0-8 on the year with a 0-3 mark in conference action while the women have an overall record of 1-7 and 0-3 in league meets.
Sophomore standout Goran Bistric (Saugus, Calif./William S. Hart) posted top-25 BIG EAST Conference times in the 100 and 200 yard backstroke during the 2006 Patriot Invitational, enough to qualify him for the conference championship. Also recording top-25 league times this season were freshmen Laura Alito (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) and Laura Stark (Martinsville, N.J./Mount St. Mary Academy), who qualified in the 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley, respectively.
The Hoyas will honor two seniors at the beginning of the meet for their four years of hard work and dedication to the swimming and diving program. Senior Laura Sytnyk (Nutley, N.J./Mount St. Dominic) is a school record-holder in the 200 butterfly, a record she broke as a freshmen and reset her junior year. She also holds top-10 school times in the 100 and 200 butterfly as well as the 400 individual medley. Senior Jennifer Zocca (Summit, N.J./Summit) has been a member of the squad all four years and specializes in sprint and mid-distance freestyle events as well as the backstroke.
The last time GU faced American was in last year's meet at American. The Georgetown women defeated the Eagles, 155-84 while the AU men took a 128-105 decision over the Blue and Gray.
