Georgetown Swimming Coach Bethany Bower Resigns; Steven Cartwright Named Interim Head Coach

Dec. 13, 2006

Washington, D.C. - Georgetown University head men's and women's swimming coach Bethany Bower resigned from her position, effective immediately, it was announced today by Director of Athletics Bernard Muir. Assistant Coach Steven Cartwright will take over as the program's interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

"We are grateful for Bethany's service and guidance during her time here and we wish her well in her future pursuits," Muir said. "Our program will be in good hands during this time of transition with Steven Cartwright at the helm."

Bower was at the helm of the Hoya program for 13 years. During that time, the team earned Academic All-America honors each semester since her start in 1994. In addition, every school record was broken during her tenure at Georgetown.

Cartwright is in his fourth season with the men's and women's swimming program. Prior to his arrival at Georgetown, Cartwright served with some of the largest and most successful swim clubs in the United States, including the Rockville-Montgomery Swim Club in North Bethesda, Md., the Seacoast Swimming Association in Dover, N.H. and the Montgomery County (Md.) Swimming League. A 2001 graduate of Catholic University, Cartwright was a two-time team MVP, holds the school record in the 200 butterfly and was named the 2000 Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Swimmer of the Year, the same year the team won the league title. He earned a bachelor of arts in philosophy from Catholic and is a Level 3 certified coach with the American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA).
