Men Place Second at BIG EAST Cross Country Championship; Women Finish Third

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University men's cross country program placed second today at the BIG EAST Cross Country Championships at the E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky. The women placed third with senior Melissa Grelli (Cupertino, Calif/Presentation) leading the way and taking first place with a time of 20:05.55. On the men's side, Louisville took first place while West Virginia took the top spot on the women's side.

In the opening men's 8k race, the 16th-ranked Hoyas (U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association national poll) were second with 60 points behind the 19th-ranked Louisville Cardinals who finished with 55 points. The 23rd-ranked Providence finished third with 74 points and Villanova's Bobby Curtis won the individual title with a course-record time of 23:08.85.

This is the fourth-consecutive year and 16th time overall the men have taken home runner-up honors at the league championships.

The men's team was led by the fifth-place performance (23:35.65) of junior Andrew Bumbalough (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood Academy). Senior Matt Debole (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) was not far behind with a time of 23:53.95 to place seventh. Junior Levi Miller (Belfast, Maine/Belfast Area) rounded out the top-10 finishers for the Hoyas with a time of 24:02.80 to take ninth place. Senior Justin Scheid (Sparta, N.J./Pop John XXII) crossed the line at 24:15.40 to taked 16th place while junior Mike Krisch (Hopkins, Minn./Edina) was the final scorer for the Blue and Gray, taking 23rd place with a time of 24:30.70.
 

 

The efforts of Bumablough, Debole and Miller earned the trio a spot on the BIG EAST Men's All-Conference Team.

In the women's 6k race, the 19th-ranked (USTFCCCA) West Virginia squad took first place with 77 points. No. 22 Providence was second with 87 points with the 11th-ranked Hoyas placing third with 92 points.

Grelli's individual title was a course-record and the first individual title for the women's cross country program since 1983. Redshirt senior Elizabeth Maloy (Loudonville, N.Y./The Academy of Holy Names) placed 12th with a time of 21:06.45 while junior Lise Ogrodnick (Beaconsfield, Quebec/Beaconsfield) was right behind her finishing 13th with a time of 21:08.75. Sophomore Renee Tomlin (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) finished 31st with a time of 21:39.40 and sophomore Lauren Gregory (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) rounded out the top Hoya performances with a time of 21:44.00, enough for 35th place.

Grelli, Maloy and Ogrodnick each earned a spot on the BIG EAST Women's All-Conference Team.

Georgetown returns to competition on Saturday, November 10 when they travel to Lehigh, Pa. for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional.
