Washington, D.C. - After falling behind 7-0 to Saint Joseph's (Pa.) in their first game on Tuesday night, the Hoyas scored the final 11 runs to complete a remarkable comeback and earn their second straight victory. Freshman Erick Fernandez (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah) went 2-for-4, scored three runs, and hit a three-run double to spark the Georgetown rally. After falling behind 7-0 to start the game, Georgetown started their comeback with a six-run outburst in the third inning. Consecutive singles by Rob Begin (Princeton, N.J./Princeton), Tommy Lee (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac), and Tom Elliott (Blue Bell, Pa. St. Joseph's Prep) loaded the bases to begin the frame. Then with one out, Sean Lamont (Houston, Texas/Bellaire) hit a sacrifice fly to left to put the Blue and Gray on the board. A wild pitch and walk would follow to reload the bases before Fernandez doubled into the right-center gap. The hit would clear the bases and breathe new life into the Hoyas. After a pitching change, junior Sean Baumann (Tampa, Fla./Freedom) connected for a two-run homer to right that pulled the team within a run, 7-6. Still trailing in the fifth, Fernandez reached on a fielding error by the SJU second baseman with one out. Now with two down, junior Greg Pustizzi (Medford, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep) worked a full count before delivering the go-ahead two run homer to left that made the score 8-7 in favor of Georgetown. Sophomore Tim Adleman (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) struggled through the first three innings but was able to maintain his composure and blank the Hawks over the next five frames. On the afternoon, the right-hander struck out five batters and allowed only one walk en route to his second victory of the season. Senior Daniel Kennedy (West Orange, N.J./Regis) closed the game by not allowing a hit in the ninth.
The Hoyas would tack on three more runs in the seventh to increase their lead to 11-7. The runs came courtesy of a two-run homer from sophomore Dan Capeless (Centerville, Mass./Boston College H.S.), GU's third of the game, and a RBI single for Begin. |
