Georgetown Baseball Wins Third Straight, Tops Rollins College, 10-8

March 4, 2008

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team won their second game on Tuesday, breaking a tie game in the ninth inning and defeating Rollins College, 10-8. An offensive attack that received contributions from a number of players pushed the Hoyas over .500 for the first time since the 2006 season.

With the game knotted at 8-8 in the ninth inning, Tommy Lee (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) beat a throw to first on a bunt attempt to third. After a sacrifice bunt by freshman Billy Henig (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel), Kelly Muir (South Pasadena, Calif./Loyola) put a single into left that placed GU runners on the corners with only one out. Sean Lamont (Houston, Texas/Bellaire) was then plunked to load the bases and the Tars made a pitching change. After the substitution, Dan Capeless (Centerville, Mass./Boston College H.S.) walked on four pitches to force home the lead run and Sean Baumann (Tampa, Fla./Freedom) followed with a RBI single to left to make the score 10-8 in favor of the Hoyas

Sophomore Alex Meyer (Pompton Plains, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) started for GU and lasted 4.2 innings and allowed three runs. Senior Grady McConnell (Capistrano, Calif./Capistrano Valley) threw a perfect 1.1 innings and struck out two batters while senior Daniel Kennedy (West Orange, N.J./Regis) also threw a perfect 1.1 innings and earned the win, his first of the year. Sophomores Billy Concannon (Dallas, Texas/St. Mark's School) and Jack Bender (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) also saw action.

Georgetown scored the first three runs of the game in the second inning on a RBI single from Rob Begin (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) and a two-run triple off the bat of Tom Elliott (Blue Bell, Pa. St. Joseph's Prep).

After Rollins College tied the game at 3-3, the Blue and Gray scored four more runs in the sixth to distance themselves. Lamont led-off with a solo homer, his second of the season and Chip Malt (Boston, Mass./Buckingham Browne & Nichols) drove in a run with a single to right field, his first RBI in 2008. Lee added a RBI infield single and Malt came around to score later in the inning on a throwing error by the Rollins catcher.

In the eighth, Georgetown would add a run after Rollins had closed the gap to 7-6. After Baumann led-off with a double, Dan Godefroi (Andover, Mass./Andover) singled and Malt lifted a sacrifice fly to tack another score on the board for the Hoyas.

The Hoyas' fourth game of Rollins College Baseball Week will be tomorrow, Wednesday, March 5 at noon against Holy Cross.
