Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team dropped their second consecutive extra-inning game to UCONN on Saturday afternoon, 9-7 in 11 innings. Sophomore Dan Capeless went 3-for-5 with four runs driven in and senior Grady McConnell threw 5 2/3 innings of shutout relief for the Hoyas. Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Georgetown scored five runs to stake their claim early in the conference clash. The frame was highlighted by a two-run double from Capeless and a RBI-double off the bat of junior Kelly Muir. Freshman Erick Fernandez and junior Sean Baumann also collected run-scoring singles in the first. A six-run fourth inning by UCONN gave the Huskies a lead, but Capeless responded with a two-run blast in the bottom half of the inning to quickly tie the game at seven apiece. UCONN had a chance to take the lead in the sixth inning when they loaded the bases with one out, but McConnell worked out of the jam to keep the tie intact. The Blue and Gray left runners on third base during the fifth, sixth and seventh innings before the Huskies had another chance to take the lead in the ninth. However, it was McConnell, yet again, working out of a bases-loaded situation to send the game into extra innings. The game would go to the 11th before a fielding error and wild pitch doomed the Hoyas.
The next game for Georgetown will be on Tuesday, March 18 at Shirley Povich Field against George Washington. |
