Georgetown Baseball Wins Third Straight, 12-3, Defeats Coppin State

April 1, 2008

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team defeated Coppin State this afternoon, 12-3, to extend their winning streak to three games. The Hoyas broke the game open in the seventh and eighth innings when they scored eight runs. Sophomore Tom Elliott returned from an injury and went 4-for-6 with two runs scored and three RBI, while freshman Erick Fernandez went 4-for-5, scoring two runs and driving in four.

The Hoyas scored four runs in the seventh and eighth innings apiece to take complete control of the contest. Freshman Dan Godefroi singled to right field and sophomore Rob Begin was hit by a pitch to start the frame, but Godefroi was thrown out while trying to steal third base for the first out. Elliott would then single up the middle and advance to second on the throw as Begin moved up to third. After a pitching change and an out, Fernandez doubled down the leftfield line to score two runs and Baumann followed with his seventh homer of the season, a two-run shot

In the eighth, freshman Billy Henig was hit by a pitch and after an out, Begin singled through the left side and the Coppin State pitcher was charged with a balk. With runners now on second and third, Elliott hit his first homerun as a Hoya, a three-run blast to left. With two down and runners on first and second, freshman Dan Capeless and junior Greg Pustizzi drew walks that brought home sophomore Chip Malt with the Hoyas'12th and final run.

Junior Jimmy Saris started the game and went four innings, allowing one run and two hits while striking out six batters. Freshman Pablo Vinent earned his first collegiate win by throwing three innings in relief and allowing one run and striking out three Eagle batters. Sophomore Billy Concannon closed the game with two innings of work and three strikeouts.

The Hoyas scored the first four runs of the game during the first four innings to set the tone. Begin hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored Henig with the first run of the game and a Fernandez single to left allowed Godefroi to cross home for a 2-0 Hoya lead. A Coppin State throwing error in the third gave the Hoyas a three-run cushion and a lead-off homer in the fourth by Fernandez put GU ahead, 4-0.

The Hoyas play again tomorrow afternoon when they travel to George Washington for a 3 p.m. game.
