Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team dropped the first game of a weekend series with Villanova on Friday afternoon, 6-4. The Hoyas received a great performance from freshman Erick Fernandez, who went 3-for-4 and knocked in all four runs for the Blue and Gray. After Villanova jumped out to a 1-0 lead, the Hoyas got on the board and took the lead in the fourth. Senior Matt Iannetta doubled to center field and freshman Sean Lamont reached on a bunt single to first base. With runners on the corners, Fernandez pushed the Hoyas in front as he hit his third homer of the season over the right-center wall. A four-run fifth inning gave the Hoyas the lead again, 5-3, but Georgetown cut the deficit to a run in the eighth inning. Down to four outs, Lamont struck out swinging but the ball got away from Villanova catcher Wesley Borden. Borden was able to react quickly and retrieve the ball but then threw wildly and Lamont went to second on the play. Fernandez would then deliver his fourth RBI of the game with a single to right center, which sliced the lead to 5-4. The Hoyas were able to get a runner to third later in the inning and then again in the ninth. However, GU could not score in either frame and the Wildcats added another score for the final tally. Sophomore Tim Adleman allowed only one earned run on five hits through five innings, but was given the loss which evened his record at 3-3. Senior Grady McConnell pitched three innings in relief and gave up one run on three hits. The Hoyas and Wildcats will resume their series tomorrow at noon in Plymouth Meeting, Pa.
