April 5, 2008 Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team let an eighth-inning lead slip away as they fell this afternoon at Villanova, 5-3. Senior Michael Gaggioli was impressive on the mound before exiting with one out in the ill-fated eighth. The left-hander had struck out eight batters and was holding a 3-1 lead, however, he left the game with the bases loaded and all three runners came around to score. The Hoyas trailed 1-0 in the seventh inning before freshman Erick Fernandez and sophomore Dan Capeless came through with consecutive, one-out singles to put runners on the corners. Then, freshman Billy Henig was able to hustle down the line and pick up an infield single to short that scored Fernandez to tie the contest. Senior Matt Harrigan followed with a two-run triple down the rightfield line, one of his three hits on the day, to give the Blue and Gray a 3-1 lead. The Hoyas had an opportunity to do damage before the seventh when they loaded the bases with no one out in the sixth. Despite the opportunity, a strikeout and double play cost the Hoyas a chance to cash in. The Blue and Gray had two hits in the inning, their first ones of the ballgame. The Hoyas and Wildcats will conclude their weekend series tomorrow at noon from Plymouth Meeting, Pa.
