Hoyas Beat Navy, 7-0; Saris Strikes Out 11, Silences Midshipmen Bats

April 9, 2008

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team won a non-conference game in Annapolis, Md., this afternoon, defeating Navy by a final score of 6-0. Three Hoyas recorded multi-hit games, sophomore Tommy Lee knocked in two runs and junior Jimmy Saris threw seven shutout innings and struck out 11 batters en route to the win.

Junior Jimmy Saris struck out a season-high 11 batters after sitting down only 18 batters through his first six starts. He also lasted a season-high seven innings allowing only five hits to Navy batters. Seniors Grady McConnell and Daniel Kennedy kept the lid on the Midshipmen over the final two innings to preserve the shutout.

The game was scoreless until the seventh inning when Georgetown pushed five runs across to break the game open. Freshman Erick Fernandez singled to left and classmate Sean Lamont followed with a double down the leftfield line. After the first Navy pitching change of the inning, senior Matt Harrigan hit a grounder to third that was misplayed. The error led to a bases-loaded situation for the Hoyas and after an out, freshman Billy Henig broke the scoreless tie with a pinch-hit RBI single up the middle.

Lee delivered the big hit of the inning during the next at-bat when he lashed a two-run single to center that made the score, 3-0, in favor of GU. After another Navy pitching change, sophomore Tom Elliott came through with a RBI single to right and then a double steal resulted in Lee beating a throw to home for the fifth and final run of the inning.

The Hoyas added a single run in the ninth after Elliott doubled to the left-center gap with one out, stole third with two outs and senior Matt Iannetta hit a single to left that created the final score, 6-0.

The Hoyas return home this weekend for a BIG EAST series against Rutgers. Friday's first pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
