Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team was defeated on Sunday afternoon at Shirley Povich Field, 9-8, by Rutgers University. Trailing 9-4 going into their final at-bat, the Hoyas got within a run thanks in large part to a three-run homer from senior Matt Harrigan, but could not come out with a victory. On the day, Harrigan had two home runs that accounted for six of Georgetown's eight runs.

Harrigan's two-out, three-run homer provided the final margin but the Hoyas started their rally prior to the senior leftfielder's blast. With one out, sophomore Tommy Lee was hit by a pitch and then with two outs, senior Matt Iannetta singled to center. Freshman Sean Lamont followed with a hot-shot to third that wasn't fielded cleanly. Everyone was safe on the play, including Lee, who cut the Rutgers lead to 9-5.

Senior Grady McConnell made his first start in two seasons and allowed four runs in 4 2/3 innings. The right-hander struck out three batters and kept the Hoyas in it as he left with the game tied. Sophomores Alex Meyer, Cary Piligian and senior Daniel Kennedy finished the game, allowing five runs over the final 4 1/3 frames.

After falling behind 2-1, the Blue and Gray retook the lead in the bottom of the third when Iannetta singled and Lamont drew a walk with two outs. Harrigan then uncorked a three-run homer for a 4-2 lead.

In the second inning, freshman Erick Fernandez and sophomore Dan Capeless hit back-to-back singles to right. Freshman Dan Godefroi would then lift a sacrifice fly to score the first run of the game and give the Hoyas a 1-0 lead.

The Hoyas will return to action on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. when they play host to George Mason.
