Washington, D.C. - Georgetown University's baseball team dropped a 6-1 contest on Tuesday night to George Mason. The Hoyas had opportunities in the game to score runs, but solid defense by the Patriots and bad luck for the Hoyas resulted in a stagnant offensive performance. Trailing 6-0 in the ninth, the Blue and Gray started to put together a rally after loading the bases to start the inning. Senior Matt Iannetta was plunked and freshman Sean Lamont and senior Matt Harrigan followed with singles. Sophomore Dan Capeless was then able to get GU on the board with a sacrifice fly to left. However, freshman pinch-hitter Ethan Root struck out and junior Greg Pustizzi fouled out to end the ball game. "I think we just got beaten tonight by a better team," Head Coach Pete Wilk said. "Since I've been here, they've always been a team that can mash and they got two homeruns tonight. They also played solid defense and got a good game out of their pitcher. Any time that happens, it's probably not going to be your night. Plus we hit into double plays that, if they don't get turned, this could've been a different ball game tonight." Junior Jimmy Saris earned the start and lasted 2 1/3 innings due to a limited pitch count. Freshman Dan Godefroi replaced Saris in the third and pitched four innings in relief. Sophomore Jack Bender allowed only hit over the final 2 2/3 innings to close out the game. "Well Jimmy [Saris] was on a pitch count tonight, and he'll pitch Sunday for us," Wilk said. "Dan came in and pitched well despite making some mistakes here and there, but they were mistakes of youth. He is only a freshman and in time he'll learn how to adjust, especially when he gets ahead of guys like he did tonight."
The Hoyas play again tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. when they host the U.S. Naval Academy. |
