Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team dropped a game they had in their grasps tonight in Cincinnati, allowing five runs after starter Michael Gaggioli exited the game, losing to the Bearcats, 8-7. Despite leaving the game with the lead, Gaggioli had loaded the bases prior to his departure and all three runners would come around to score. Freshman Tommy Lee started things off for the Hoyas in the first inning by getting hit by a pitch, one of three times he was plunked during the contest. With Lee aboard, classmate Erick Fernandez walked, and senior Matt Harrigan followed with a two-run double to give the visiting Blue and Gray an early 2-0 lead. After Cincinnati cut the lead to 2-1, Georgetown had their biggest offensive outburst in the fourth frame. With one out, six consecutive Hoyas reached base safely, with four runners eventually coming around to score. Sophomore Dan Capeless doubled and freshman Dan Godefroi struck out, but reached first base on a wild pitch from UC hurler Michael Hill. With runners on the corners, junior Greg Pustizzi singled to score Capeless. Then, sophomore Tom Elliott notched a base hit to load the bases for Lee, who doubled to bring home Godefroi and Pustizzi. A single by Fernandez plated Elliott and extended the Hoyas' lead to 6-1. Two Bearcat runs in the fourth made the score 6-3, but the Hoyas pushed their lead to 7-3 when Sean Lamont knocked a home run well over the left-field wall off of UC's Adam Calez. The homer was Lamont's 11th of the season and he is currently ranked among the top 50 nationally.
Gaggioli gave a valiant effort, allowing eight runs on 12 hits, with seven punch outs in 5 1/3 innings of service on the mound. The Hoyas' starter fell to 1-5 with the loss. Senior Grady McConnell replaced Gaggioli and he, combined with sophomore Alex Meyer and senior Daniel Kennedy, tossed 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Georgetown and Cincinnati will conclude their three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. |
