Hoyas Drop Rainy Game to 20th-Ranked UVA, 9-1

April 22, 2008

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team lost a non-conference affair on Tuesday night in Charlottesville, Va., to the home town Cavaliers, 9-1. Virginia is currently ranked 20th in the USA TODAY/ESPN Top 25 Coaches Poll and the Hoyas used six different pitchers during the game.

Senior Erick Chandler started and was relieved by sophomore Alex Meyer as each player went two innings. Sophomore Jack Bender, freshman Dan Godefroi, sophomore Cary Piligian and senior Daniel Kennedy all worked an inning for the Blue and Gray.

The big inning for UVA was the second as the Cavaliers scored five runs to take a 6-0 lead. For the game, third baseman Tyler Cannon went 2-for-5 with two runs and three driven in while leftfielder Dan Grovatt finished 4-for-4 with three RBI. Jacob Thompson earned the win allowing only two hits during his three, pitch count-limited, innings.

Georgetown got on the board when in the seventh, senior Matt Harrigan smashed a double off the right-center scoreboard wall. Senior Matt Iannetta followed with a walk and a passed ball moved both runners up to second and third. Junior Kelly Muir then hit a grounder to third for the second out of the inning, but the play also drove in Harrigan with the Hoyas' lone run.

The Hoyas get back into their BIG EAST schedule on Friday night when they travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. to play the host Panthers at 6 p.m.
