Georgetown Wins Second Game of Doubleheader at Pittsburgh, 7-4.

April 26, 2008

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - Georgetown responded from a loss earlier in the day on Saturday with a 7-4 win over Pittsburgh in the second game of a doubleheader. Thanks to six strong innings from junior Jimmy Saris and some timely hitting, the Hoyas never trailed in the night-cap.

Saris allowed one earned run over six innings on the way to his fifth win of the season. Sophomore Cary Piligian pitched an inning of scoreless relief and senior Daniel Kennedy pitched the final two frames.

GU got things going offensively when freshman Erick Fernandez smashed a lead-off homerun in the second for a 1-0 advantage. The Blue and Gray would tack on two more in the third when sophomore Tommy Lee singled and was brought home on a RBI triple from sophomore Chip Malt. On the very next play, Malt scored on a groundout to second off the bat of senior Matt Harrigan.

Sophomore Tom Elliott's solo dinger in the fifth moved the Hoya lead back up to three runs, after Pittsburgh had broken on to the scoreboard in the fourth.

Holding a slim 4-3 lead going into the top of the ninth, GU realized a few more runs would provide them with the cushion they needed to secure the win. Lee was plunked to start and Malt and Harrigan drew walks to load the bases. With one out, sophomore Dan Capeless hit a grounder to first that was thrown away, allowing two Hoya runners to score on the play. Fernandez would lift a fly-ball to center that scored Harrigan on the next play, accounting for the final Hoya run.
