Box Score

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team saw their chances of a winning streak snapped this afternoon in Fairfax, Va., losing 13-9 to the host George Mason Patriots. Senior Matt Harrigan tied the school record with five hits in a game and freshman Erick Fernandez, along with sophomore Dan Capeless, each drove in three runs apiece.

George Mason was ahead 6-4 before GU retook the lead in the top of the fifth. Sophomore Tom Elliott walked, and after a groundout and stolen base, stood on third with one out. Second baseman Chip Malt singled to right on the very next play for a RBI. Consecutive singles after the Malt at-bat loaded the bases for Fernandez. The Hoya third baseman, playing for Sean Lamont, took a pitch to right that found grass and scored two runs to tie the game. After a walk to Muir reloaded the bases, Capeless hit into a fielder's choice which gave the Blue and Gray a 7-6 lead.

After relinquishing the lead again and falling behind 10-7, Georgetown loaded the bases with one out in the sixth inning. Senior Matt Iannetta inched the Hoyas closer with a sacrifice fly to right and Fernandez knocked in a runner on a single to left. A questionable call on a groundout to third by Capeless ended the Hoya rally.

Georgetown started the game strong when sophomore Tommy Lee hit a grounder to third and outran the throw to reach base safely. After stealing second and third, Malt grounded out to the left side to score the speedy centerfielder for a 1-0 lead.

After the first frame, Mason grabbed five runs before the Hoyas responded with two in the top of fourth to get back in the game. With two down, a single off the bat of junior Kelly Muir was followed by a two-run homer from Capeless, cutting the deficit to 5-3.

Sophomore Alex Meyer took the loss, allowing seven earned runs in four and one-third innings. Senior Grady McConnell, freshman Dan Godefroi and sophomore Jack Bender closed the game for the Hoyas out of the bullpen.

The Hoyas host Coppin State tomorrow afternoon at Shirley Povich Field. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 4 p.m.
