Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University (17-28) baseball team won their second game in a row, and third out of four contests, as they topped Coppin State (0-41) this afternoon at Shirley Povich Field, 8-3. The Hoyas swept the home-and-home series this year from the Eagles as they used a five-run first inning to propel them to victory. Freshman Alex Meyer (Pompton Plains, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) got his team-leading fourth win of the season as he pitched five shutout innings, allowing only two hits and striking out a career-high eight batters. Senior Mike Hoy (Southlake, Texas/Southlake) and sophomore Andy Ferich (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) pitched in relief of Meyer and junior Grady McConnell (Capistrano, Calif./Capistrano Valley) pitched a perfect ninth to close it out. Georgetown got all the offense they needed in the first when they jumped on Coppin State with five runs. After a lead-off walk and stolen base by senior Derek deGrijs (Nashville, Tenn./Goodpasture), junior Matt Iannetta (Providence, R.I./St. Raphael Academy) doubled to right center to bring home the first run of the game. Another double would then follow off the bat of junior Matthew Bouchard (East Greenwich, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) that scored Iannetta and made it 2-0 in favor of the Hoyas. With one out, junior Matt Harrigan (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) singled to center field, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the Coppin State catcher. He would be Georgetown's third runner to score when senior Joseph Graziano (Floral Park, N.Y./Chaminade) doubled to left field. Then it was sophomore Sean Baumann's (Tampa, Fla./Freedom)turn as he smashed his team-leading sixth home run of the season to cap the first inning scoring
A run-scoring single by Bouchard in the second inning pushed Georgetown to a 6-0 advantage and a sacrifice fly by Iannetta in the fifth made it 7-0 before Coppin State finally got on the board with three runs in the seventh and eighth innings. In the bottom of the eighth, freshman Billy Concannon (Dallas, Texas/St. Mark's School) came through with his first collegiate RBI when he lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield and plated Graziano with the final run of the ball game. Graziano had reached base after his third hit of the day, his first three-hit game of the season. Georgetown will play a pivotal three-game BIG EAST series this weekend with Pittsburgh. The two will play a doubleheader on Saturday, May 5 at Shirley Povich Field starting at 4 p.m. The third game will be on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. |
