Washington, D.C. - Pittsburgh left fielder Sean Conley hit an RBI double with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Panthers came back from a 2-0 deficit en route to a 3-2 win over Georgetown in a BIG EAST Conference baseball game at Threes Field in Pittsburgh Friday afternoon. The Hoyas fall to 23-32 overall and 9-17 in the BIG EAST. The loss eliminates Georgetown from the race for the eighth and final spot in next week's conference tournament. Pittsburgh improves to 23-28 overall and 10-16 in league play. Sophomore reliever Dan Kennedy (W. Orange, N.J./Regis), who entered the game in the eighth inning, hit Dan Williams to lead off the 10th inning. A sacrifice bunt from Zac Cline moved Williams to second and Conley's double to left-center plated him with the winning run. The Panthers had tied the game in the ninth. Jim Negrych hit a leadoff double, moved to third on a bunt from Jimmy Mayer and, after Morgan Kielty was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners, Peter Parise doubled to left-center to plate Negrych with the tying run. Kennedy was able to induce a ground ball out and a strike out to get out of the jam. The Hoyas had a chance to take a lead in the top of the 10th inning with two out, as Pittsburgh reliever Justin Cicatello issued walks to sophomore Matt Bouchard (E. Greenwich, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) and junior Mark McLaughlin (Walnut Creek, Calif./De La Salle), but he was able to induce a ground ball out to end the inning. Georgetown took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the third inning. Senior Timmy Jones (Ledgewood, N.J./Morristown) was hit by a pitch and moved to second when senior Drew Dargen (Edmond, Okla./Edmond North) walked with one out. With two out, a balk moved the runners up to second and third, and wild pitches from Rob Brant brought in both runs.
Senior starter Stephen Burns (Westchester, Pa./Malvern Prep) went 5.2 innings for the Hoyas, taking a no-decision. He gave up one unearned run on five hits with eight walks and four strikeouts. Kennedy threw 1.2 innings, giving up two runs on three hits with one strikeout. The Hoyas wrap up their season Saturday, May 20, playing Pittsburgh at noon. |
