Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University (21-34, 8-19 BIG EAST) baseball team finished their season on a high note as they pounded West Virginia (29-22, 10-16 BE) on Saturday afternoon in Morgantown, 10-1. Georgetown's win also ended West Virginia's postseason hopes as the Mountaineers would have qualified with a win. However, the Hoyas played the role of spoilers, breaking open a close game with a seven-run ninth inning. Amidst the offensive fireworks provided by the Hoyas, junior Jimmy Saris (Great Falls, Va./Langley Prep) pitched seven innings, allowing an unearned run on six hits, to notch his fourth win of the season. Saris also struck out three West Virginia batters set a new Georgetown single-season strikeout record. For the season, Saris struck out 78 batters, thus breaking the mark of 75 set by Eddie Pena in 2005. For the second day in a row, Georgetown held a 3-1 lead on West Virginia, but unlike yesterday, the Blue and Gray were able to walk away with the victory. The ninth inning was highlighted by a three-run single off the bat of freshman Tom Elliott (Blue Bell, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) as Georgetown scored six of the inning's seven runs with two outs. With one out and senior Mark McLaughlin (Walnut Creek, Calif./De La Salle) on second, senior Derek deGrijs (Nashville, Tenn./Goodpasture) hit a groundball to the deep part of the infield's right side. deGrijs was able to reach base safely with his third hit of the day and McLaughlin came all the way around from second base to make the score 4-1, in favor of GU. The Hoyas would score the next three runs on RBI-singles off the bats of junior Matt Iannetta (Providence, R.I./Bishop Hendricken), senior Joseph Graziano (Floral Park, N.Y./Chaminade), and junior Matt Harrigan (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy).
Senior Mark Dutmers (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview) recorded two outs in a brief relief appearance while junior Daniel Kennedy (West Orange, N.J./Regis) registered the final four outs for the Hoyas. Georgetown struck first when sophomore Kelly Muir (South Pasadena, Calif./Loyola) hit his second homer of the season, a solo shot, in the second inning to open the scoring. A run-scoring single by deGrijs in the fifth made the score, 2-0, and Muir collected another RBI in the sixth on a fielder's choice to hand Georgetown a three-run lead. |
