Field Awarded Second Consecutive Weekly Honors; Gazitua Named Baseball’s Player of the Week

April 15, 2002

Right-handed Kevin Field followed up his no-hitter from last week with an outstanding performance against St. Johns earning GU’s Pitcher of the Week for the second consecutive time.  The sophomore tossed eight innings in a game scheduled for seven limiting the Redstorm to two runs on five hits while striking out five and walking three.  Despite the success on the mound as of late Field has received little to no run support and this game was no different, as he got a no decision in the Hoyas 5-4 10-inning loss.

Centerfielder Carlos Gazitua fared well at the plate this past week earning Player of the Week honors for the Hoyas.  The second-year man batted 8-for-16 (.500) with two doubles and a slugging percentage of .625.  Gazitua also scored five of the 14 Hoya runs this past week and collected an RBI while totaling 10 bases.  He now boasts a .300 batting average for the season and leads the team in both runs scored (36) and runs batted in (29).
