Washington, D.C. - When Georgetown senior center Roy Hibbert (Adelphi, Md./Georgetown Prep) hit his first career three-pointer in a game recently, his coaches and teammates told everyone that it was not a surprise, the 7-2, 275-pound preseason All-American is a good shooter and routinely hit those shots in practice. On Saturday, in front of a sold-out crowd of 20,035 at Verizon Center, Hibbert was left open at the top of the key and with the game clock running down to 4.0 seconds, he calmly sank a three-pointer, breaking a 69-69 tie and lifting No. 7 Georgetown to a come-from-behind 72-69 win over Connecticut. Hibbert scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead four players in double figures for Georgetown, who trailed by six points with just over four minutes left in the game. It was the fifth-straight win for the Hoyas, who improved to 13-1 overall and 3-0 in the BIG EAST Conference, the league's only unbeaten team through the first two weeks of conference action. UConn falls to 11-4 overall and 2-2 in the league. The win over Connecticut, coupled with last year's 59-46 win at Verizon Center, marks the first time Georgetown had beaten the Huskies in consecutive games since the 1992-93 season. Georgetown led at the break by four points (42-38) and again led 56-64 after Hibbert hit a layup with 9:57 to play, but the Huskies used a 7-0 run over 2:28 to take a 61-56 lead on a Jerome Dyson layup. Georgetown pulled to within two points after freshman guard Austin Freeman (Mitchellville, Md./DeMatha) hit a three-pointer, but a jumper from Adrien and a dunk from Dyson made it, 67-61. The Hoyas, who connected on 10-of-23 three-point attempts, used the long ball again, as Freeman and junior guard Jessie Sapp (New York N.Y./National Christian Academy [Md.]) each hit three-pointers, the latter tying the game with 2:22 to play. A pair of free throws from UConn's Hasheem Thabeet with 1:55 to play gave the Huskies a 69-67 lead, but the game was tied for the sixth time after senior forward Patrick Ewing, Jr. (Marietta, Ga./National Christian Academy [Md.]) hit a layup with 1:43 left. Both teams had chances in the final minute, but Freeman missed a three with 1:02 to play and UConn's Doug Wiggins missed a jumper from the corner with 39 second left, setting up Hibbert's heroics. The Hoyas jumped out to a quick lead in the opening three-plus minutes, with Summers hitting a three and consecutive baskets from Sapp, Hibbert and Freeman giving the hosts a 9-1 lead. The Huskies climbed back into it with a 13-5 run over the span of 4:08, tying the game at 14-all on a three-pointer from Doug Wiggins. A three from Ewing gave the Hoyas a 17-14 lead, but three free throws from Wiggins tied the game at 19 before the teams traded the lead over the next three minutes. Leading by five points after a Summers jumper, UConn pulled to within two points, 30-28, on a three from Wiggins. Georgetown, however, used a 10-3 run over a 4:04 span, taking a 40-31 lead on a layup from Hibbert. The Hoyas matched their lead on a Hibbert basket, 42-33, but the Huskies scored the final five points of the half, including a pair of free throws from Jeff Adrien, to cut the lead to 42-38 at the break. It was the second game with at least 20 points for Hibbert, who connected on 7-of-14 shots from the field and 5-of-7 from the line. Ewing finished with 14 points and five rebounds, while Freeman added 13 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals and sophomore forward DaJuan Summers (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) chipped in 12 points, five rebounds and two assists. The Hoyas shot 42.1 percent from the floor (24-of-57), including 43.5 percent from three-point land (10-of-23), while hitting 73.7 percent of their free throws (14-of-19). The team held a 32-29 advantage on the boards, grabbing 12 on the offensive glass, and handed out 15 assists while committing only eight turnovers. Georgetown plays next on Monday, January 16, traveling to Pittsburgh for a date with the Panthers. The game will be shown live on ESPN and can be heard locally on SportsTalk 980 AM.
