Washington, D.C. - Hibbert (21), Summers (17, 11) Lead No. 5 Georgetown Past Notre Dame, 84-65

Washington, D.C. - Georgetown senior center Roy Hibbert (Adelphi, Md./Georgetown Prep) scored 21 points and sophomore forward DaJuan Summers (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) recorded his first double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds as the fifth-ranked Hoyas limited Notre Dame to 32 percent shooting from the field en route to an 84-65 win in front of a sold out crowd of 19,286 at Verizon Center.

It was the sixth win in the last seven games for the Hoyas, who improve to 14-2 overall and 4-1 in the BIG EAST Conference, while Notre Dame falls to 13-4 overall and 3-2 in the league.

Georgetown led by 13 points (38-25) at the half and scored the first nine points of the second half as the Hoya defense held Notre Dame scoreless for the first 5:17 of the second half. The opening 9-0 run was keyed by two three-pointers from Summers and capped off by a layup from Hibbert.

Notre Dame pulled to within 14 points, 48-34, after a layup from Zack Hillesland, but the Hoyas out-scored the Irish 13-4 over the next 4:20 and took a 61-38 lead on a jumper from senior guard Jonathan Wallace (Harvest, Ala./Sparkman) with 8:40 to play. Georgetown's biggest lead, 66-42 (24 points), came on a three-pointer from junior guard Jessie Sapp (New York, N.Y./National Christian Academy [Md.]) with 5:20 to play.

The teams battled back and forth in the first half, with two ties and four lead changes. After a Hibbert layup gave the Hoyas a 15-14 lead with 11:40 to play, Jonathan Peoples hit a three-pointer with 9:51 to play, giving the Irish a 17-16. Those were the last points Notre Dame would hit for 5:55, as Georgetown used a 15-0 run and took a 31-17 on a layup from sophomore forward Vernon Macklin (Portsmouth, Va./Hargrave Military Academy). Hibbert scored the first six points of the run, with Summers hitting a layup, Freeman hitting a three and Sapp connecting on a basket.

A three-pointer from Notre Dame junior Kyle McAlarney cut the GU lead to 31-22 and was the Irish's first field goal during a span of 6:52 in the opening 20 minutes. Sapp responded with a three of his own, pushing the lead back to 12 points (34-22) and the Hoyas held a 38-25 lead at the break. Hibbert scored 13 of his game-high xx points during the first half, connecting on 4-of-5 of the field and 5-of-6 from the line. Summers and Freeman each scored nine points and Sapp added five points.

Hibbert scored 21 points - connecting on 7-of-11 shots from the field and 7-of-9 from the free throw line - grabbed three rebounds and tied a career-high with five assists. Summers added 17 points - hitting 5-of-10 shots from the field and 5-of-7 from the free throw line - to go with a career-high 11 rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Freshman guard Austin Freeman (Mitchellville, Md./DeMatha) scored 16 points and grabbed four rebounds and Sapp added 14 points and six assists.

The Hoyas connected on 52.8 percent of their field goals (28-of-53), 40.0 percent of their three-pointers (8-of-20) and 69.0 percent of their free throws (20-of-29). Notre Dame was limited to a season-low 32.8 percent from the field (20-of-61).

Georgetown continues its weekend homestand on Monday night, January 21, hosting Syracuse at Verizon Center. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. and the game will be shown live on ESPN, with Sean McDonough, Jay Bilas and Bill Raftery calling the action. Locally, it can be heard on SportsTalk 980 AM as Rich Chvotkin calls his 34th year of Georgetown basketball.
