Raleigh, N.C. - Georgetown led by 17 points early in the second half, but 10th-seeded Davidson received 30 points from sophomore guard Stephen Curry and held on for a 74-70 upset win over the second-seeded Hoyas in front of 19,477 fans at RBC Center Sunday afternoon. Leading by 11 points at the break, 38-27, Georgetown used an 8-2 run over the opening 2:10 of the second half and took its biggest lead, 46-29, on a three-pointer from sophomore forward DaJuan Summers (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh). For the game, the Hoyas shot 63.4 percent, as opposed to Davidson's 38.6 percent. Davidson, led by sophomore guard Stephen Curry, who averages more than 25 points per game, raced back. A drive from freshman guard Chris Wright (Bowie, Md./St. John's College [D.C.]) gave the Hoyas a 48-32 lead, but the Wildcats went on a 16-2 run over 6:13 and narrowed the gap to four points, 50-46, after a three from Curry, who scored seven points during the spurt, and a layup from Andrew Lovedale. A turnaround jumper in the lane from freshman guard Chris Wright (Bowie, Md./St. John's Catholic (D.C.)) ended a spell of 3:33 without a field goal for the Hoyas and pushed the lead back to four points, 52-48, with 8:25 to play. Senior center Roy Hibbert (Adelphi, Md./Georgetown Prep), who was plagued with foul trouble early in the second half, scored to push the lead back to four points, 54-50, but Curry and Davidson caught fire. The guard scored 13 of the team's next 15 points, including eight-straight at one point, and the Wildcats took a five-point lead, 65-60, with 2:55 to play. Davidson connected on 10 of 11 free throws down the stretch, with eight of those attempts coming from Curry.
The teams battled back and forth for the better part of the first eight minutes of the game. A drive from senior guard Jonathan Wallace (Harvest, Ala./Sparkman) gave the Hoyas a 6-4 lead at 16:52, but the Wildcats scored five-straight points - on a three from Curry and a pull-up jumper from Jason Richards - and took a 9-6 lead. Georgetown responded with five straight points of its own, taking a 14-11 after a three-pointer from junior guard Jessie Sapp (New York, N.Y./National Christian Academy). For the game, Wallace finished with 12 points and four rebounds while Sapp ended the afternoon with a team-high 14 points and four rebounds. After a put-back basket from Thomas Sander cut the lead to 14-13, a dunk from senior forward Patrick Ewing, Jr. (Marietta, Ga./National Christian Academy [Md.]) and a free throw from sophomore center Vernon Macklin (Portsmouth, Va./Hargrave Military Academy) extended Georgetown's lead to 17-13. That was the start of an 11-4 run over a span of 5:04 as the Hoyas pushed the lead to eight points, 25-17, on a dunk from Macklin. A conventional three-point play from Lovedale narrowed the margin to five points, 25-20, but a 12-3 run over 2:27 gave the Hoyas their biggest lead of the half, 37-23, on a three from freshman guard Austin Freeman (Mitchellville, Md./DeMatha). |
