Summers Scores 17 Points, No. 14 Georgetown Tops Fairfield, 73-60

Bridgeport, Conn. - Freshman forward DaJuan Summers (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) scored a career-high 17 points and No. 14 Georgetown connected on 55 percent of its shots from the field en route to a 73-60 win over Fairfield in front of 5,627 fans at the Arena at Harbor Yard. It was the third win of the season for the Hoyas, who improve to 3-1 overall. The Stags are now 1-6 overall. Summers, making his first career start, scored 11 of his game-high 17 points in the second half, as Georgetown scored 10 of the first 12 points, opening up a 44-32 lead on a jumper from the baseline with 16:13 to play. The Hoyas out-scored the Stags 10-2 over the first 3:47 of the second stanza, with Summers scoring seven points and junior forward Jeff Green (Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern) adding a three. After taking the 44-32 lead, the Blue and Gray scored seven-consecutive points to finish a 17-2 spurt to start the second half. Junior center Roy Hibbert (Adelphi, Md./Georgetown Prep) hit a jumper and took a feed from Green for a dunk and a three-pointer from junior guard Jonathan Wallace (Harvest, Ala./Sparkman) capped the run. Georgetown maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game, with the biggest lead swelling to 19 points on two occasions, first at 51-32 on the three from Wallace with 12:55 to play, and then at 64-45 on a Wallace three-pointer with 6:14 left in the game. The Stags came out strong in the early portion of the game, with a dunk and a layup from Anthony Johnson followed by a Mike Van Schaick jumper giving Fairfield a 6-0 lead at 17:31. After a 30-second timeout called by GU Head Coach John Thompson III, the Hoyas used a 10-3 run over a span of 3:26 to take a 10-9 lead on a layup from sophomore guard Jessie Sapp (New York, N.Y./National Christian Academy [Md.]). Baskets from Van Schaick and Jonathan Han gave Fairfield a 13-10 lead, but a three-point play from Sapp tied the game at 13-all.
Fairfield scored five-straight points on a three-pointer from Danny Ogelsby and a jumper from Marty O'Sullivan to take an 18-13 lead, but two free throws and a layup from sophomore forward Marc Egerson (Wilmington, Del./Glasgow) and one shot at the charity stripe from Sapp tied the game for the second time in the opening 20 minutes. The game was tied again at 19-all when the Hoyas used a 15-5 run over a span of 4:20 to take a 34-24 lead on a three-point play from Summers with 1:31 to play before the break. During the run, Summers scored six points, Egerson hit a three and freshman guard Jeremiah Rivers (Winter Park, Fla./Winter Park) scored a pair of baskets. The Stags scored four points in the final 20 seconds to cut the margin to four points, 34-30, at the break. Eight different players scored for the Hoyas and two were in double figures. Summers connected on 6-of-10 shots from the field and added three rebounds before fouling out. He was joined in double figures by Sapp, who scored 14 points, had three rebounds, three steals and two assists. Hibbert added nine points and tied his career-high with six blocks; Wallace finished with nine points; Green had eight points, six rebounds and five assists; Egerson added seven points and two boards, freshman Vernon Macklin (Portsmouth, Va./Hargrave Military Academy) added five points and Rivers chipped in four. The Hoyas connected on 55.8 percent of their field goals (24-of-43), 42.1 percent of their three-pointers (8-of-19) and 73.9 percent of their free throws (17-of-23). Georgetown out-rebounded the Stags, 24-23, had 12 assists and 14 turnovers. Georgetown returns to action at Verizon Center on Monday, November 27, hosting Ball State in non-league game. Tip-off for the game is slated for 7:30 p.m. The game will be shown live on MASN and can be heard on AM 1260, with Rich Chvotkin, the Voice of Georgetown Basketball, calling his 1,000th career game for the Hoyas. |
