Washington, D.C. - Sophomore center Roy Hibbert (Adelphi, Md./Georgetown Prep) recorded his second-straight double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds to lead four players in double figures as Georgetown won its third-straight game, beating Savannah State, 78-49, in front of 4,875 fans at the MCI Center Wednesday night. It was the last game before the Christmas break for the Hoyas, who improved to 6-2 overall. The Tigers, coached by Horace Broadnax, a guard on the Georgetown 1985 National Championship team, lost their 10th-straight game and fell to 1-10. Georgetown scored the first five points of the game on a three-pointer from sophomore guard Jonathan Wallace (Harvest, Ala./Sparkman) and a layup from Hibbert, but the Tigers clawed back and were down by only three points, 12-9, after a basket from Javon Randolph with 12:42 to play in the half. A layup from Christopher Linton with 8:37 to play made it a seven-point game, 21-14, but Georgetown outscored 18-6 over the remainder of the period, taking a 41-22 lead at the break. Hibbert was too much for the Tigers in the first half, however. The 7-2, 283-pound sophomore scored 15 of his points in the first 20 minutes, connecting on 4-of-7 shots from the field and 7-of-10 from the free throw line as the Hoyas jumped out to the early lead. He finished the game with a game-high 16 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field and 8-of-12 from the line. It was his second-straight double-double, third this season and the fifth of his career. Leading by 19 points at the half, the Hoyas pushed the lead into the 20s early in the second half and maintained that for the majority of the game. A fast-break dunk from senior guard Darrel Owens (Napoleonville, La./Assumption) gave the Hoyas a 56-28 lead with 12:44 to play. Less than a minute later, Owens canned a three to make it a 59-30 game with 12:14 left in the game.
In the final quarter of the game, the lead grew into the 30s, first on a Wallace jumper with 10:39 left to play, giving the Hoyas a 61-30 lead. Georgetown took its biggest lead, 65-30 (35 points), on a pair of free throws from freshman forward Octavius (Tay) Spann (College Park, Ga./Banneker). The Hoyas took advantage of a big height difference, out-scoring the under-sized Tigers 44-18, and took advantage of 18 Savannah State turnovers, scoring 31 points off turnovers. Green finished with 11 points, connecting on 5-of-11 shots from the field, grabbed eight rebounds and had four assists; freshman guard Jessie Sapp (New York, N.Y./National Christian Academy) added 11 points and four assists and Wallace finished with 10 points and three assists. The Hoyas connected on 50.9 percent of their shots from the field (28-of-55), 64.3 percent of their free throws (18-of-28) and 25.0 percent of their free throws (4-of-16). Savannah State shot 40.0 percent from the floor (18-of-45), 23.1 percent from three-point land (3-of-13) and 83.3 percent from the free throw line (10-of-12). Georgetown controlled the boards, out rebounding Savannah State, 41-21, handed out 19 assists, blocked six shots and had eight steals. Georgetown returns to action next week, when they travel to Texas to play in the Sun Bowl Tournament. The Hoyas play Colgate in first round action on Tuesday, December 27. Tipoff is slated for 11 p.m. ET and the game can be heard on AM 570, with Rich Chvotkin calling the action.
