Hoyas Maintain Pressure, Win by 25+ for Second Consecutive Game

1/16/2002   The Hoyas (11-5, 2-2) won at home on 1/16/02, defeating the Pirates of Seton Hall (9-8, 2-3) 84-58. Gerald Riley paced the Hoyas’ point production with 16 points in 24 minutes. Mike Sweetney, who played 22 minutes, scored 14 points and led all rebounders with 9 boards, just missing his 10th double-double. Kevin Braswell and Harvey Thomas contributed 12 points each. Kevin also had 5 assists and 4 steals while Harvey only saw 15 minutes of action. Wesley Wilson rounded out the quintet in double figures with 10 points.

 The Hoyas trailed or tied through the first 6:53, but after that, proved to be inhospitable hosts to the visiting Pirates. Leading by as many as 12, Georgetown took a 19-12 rebounding edge and a 9 point lead (36-27) into the locker room at intermission.

 In the second stanza the Hoyas turned it up a notch  with a 28-7 run which gave them a 31 point lead, (the largest of the contest). Coach Esherick seated Sweetney and Riley early and gave freshmen, Bethel, Hall and Thomas valuable playing experience. The final differential was 26, 84-58.

 For the game the Hoyas shot 51.9% from the field (58.3% in the second half) while holding the Pirates to 36.8%. Georgetown also won the battle of the boards 38-25.
