Men's Basketball Falls to Temple 53-59

n a Hoyas lose to Owls…. Georgetown (13-8, 4-6) dropped its second of three road games on 2/14/04 when the fell to Temple (11-10) 53-59 in non-conference play. Gerald Riley paced the Hoyas scoring with 15 points, Ashanti Cook added 12. Gerald and Ashanti had 4 assists each. Courtland Freeman scored 11points and had 6 boards. Brandon Bowman led all rebounders with 12 caroms while adding 9 points.

            The Hoyas opened well, jumping out to a 10-1 lead in the first 3 minutes. The Owls came back to tie the score over the next 5 minutes as the Hoyas’ shooting touch drained away. With 01:30 remaining in the half, GU trailed by 1, 24-23 but a turnover cost GU 2 and a foul on the perimeter gave Hawkins three chances from the stripe in the final 3 seconds. The halftime margin was 6, 23-29.

            In the second stanza Georgetown did not score a field goal for the first 9:10 and put only 4 points up from the stripe. Having spotted the home team 14, the Hoyas spent the remainder of the game working on the deficit. A trey by Cook at the 1:07 mark cut the deficit to 4 and another 44 seconds later made the difference 3, but good free throw shooting by the Owls kept the game out of Georgetown’s reach.

            For the game the Hoyas won the battle of the boards 41-40, but gave up 18 turnovers while forcing 11. The Hoyas held the Owls to 33.3% shooting from the field, but only hit 31.5% of their shots.
